Mangaluru: Dr Anurag J Shetty Assistant Professor Department of Gastroenterology in KMC hospital Mangalore has successfully undergone advanced endoscopic training in POEM and ESD at West China hospital.

ESD (Endoscopic submucosal dissection) and POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) are highly advanced endoscopic procedures in the domain of third space endoscopy being performed in very few advanced centres across the globe. These are highly intricate and technically demanding endoscopic procedures.

ESD is a procedure wherein the early tumours in the Esophagus, Stomach and rectosigmoid region can be removed with endoscopy thus avoiding major surgeries and faster resumption of normal activity. POEM is an endoscopic procedure used for swallowing difficulties and disorders of the esophagus such as achalasia cardia, esophageal diverticulum. All these diseases were traditionally being treated with surgery which can now be managed endoscopically if diagnosed at an early stage.

Dr Anurag J Shetty completed the above training under the guidance of Prof. Hu Bing who is a renowned endoscopist of international repute. The training was imparted at west china hospital which is ranked as the second-best hospital of China.
