Mangaluru: Gynaecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. As specialists, they have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of these cancers. And right here in Mangaluru, Dr Mariam Anjum Iftikhar has come out in flying colours by securing MCH in Gynaecological Oncology from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi. And Mangaloreans should feel proud that Dr Mariam is the FIRST MCH specialist doctor from Dakshina Kannada district to acquire specialization in this field of Gynaecologists.

One such dynamic personality, who turned her passion into her profession, is Dr. Mariam Anjum Iftikhar. Presently she is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru. Hailing from a respected and renowned family, she was encouraged by her family members to start her career in medicine. This started the fire in her; a fire to do something in the medical profession. To pursue her dreams, after securing MBBS degree from Fr Muller’s Medical College in the city, she completed her postgraduate MS degree in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (OBG) from Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte-Mangaluru.

Dr Mariam then completed a fellowship in women’s cancer in Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology at Bengaluru. She also got specialized training there in Palliative Oncology Treatment, Chemotherapy and other kinds of Cancer treatments including high-risk GTN. And now her biggest achievement in this field is securing her MCH degree from Kochi-based Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, thereby successfully completing high-level study in medical science. A meritorious student, right from her school days, Dr Mariam has bagged merit seats all along her educational journey. Dr Mariam, who was a talented student right from her school days, always secured seats on the basis of her merit.

She is a highly experienced surgeon specializing in advanced Gynaecological procedures in the last seven years of her career. She is a person with an impeccable reputation, well-renowned in local circuits, with a large number of patients having full confidence in her care visiting her for treatment. She has studied different types of cancers affecting women at a high level, having acquired specialized training in breast Oncology, uterine, vaginal, ovarian, cervical, vulva and other types of cancers, and added to her credit, she is an expert in robotic surgery. She strives to provide quality healthcare to all the women who seek her service and is known for her compassion for innovation and bringing new ideas at Yenepoya Medical College/Hospital.

Dr Mariam has presented several of her works in prestigious symposiums and meeting at many conferences and medical gathering. This multi-talented personality is actively engaged in teaching, research, and administrative activities related to gynecology. Her research articles and presentations have been published in a number of national and international publications. Recently Dr Mariam’s essay presentation in a Medical Symposium held in South Korea has fetched her a chance to take part in an International Medical Conference to be held in Brazil along with an exciting scholarship offer.

Daughter of Ms & Mr Natty Moideen Kunhi and granddaughter of A S Manippady, Dr Mariam is the daughter-in-law of former MLA U T Fareed. Married to Dr U T Iftikhar ( syndicate member of Rajiv Gandhi Gandhi University of Medical Sciences-Bengaluru) -the brother of former minister MLA U T Khader, the Iftikar’s are proud parents of two children.
