Eminent Tulu scholar UP Upadhyaya Dies of COVID-19

Udupi: Noted scholar and the Chief Editor of monumental linguistic work, The Tulu Lexicon, Uliyar Padmanabha Upadhyaya (88) died of COVID-19 in a private hospital on July 17 late night.

According to the DHO Dr Sudhirchandra Sooda, Padmanabha Upadhyaya was admitted to a private hospital some days back due to heart disease. He breathed last on July 17 at around 11:30 pm. His throat swab was sent for test and was confirmed positive for COVID-19. His final rights were conducted as per the COVID-19 norms.

UP Upadhyaya is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife Susheela who was also an eminent Tulu scholar, had compiled the Tulu Lexicon along with him had passed away on January 14, 2014, at the age of 77 years.

The Tulu Lexicon, with six volumes, was a major contribution to linguistics by the Upadhyaya couple. Its first volume was published in 1988 and the last volume in 1997. The Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodana Kendra had published the Lexicon in Udupi.
