Ernest J Rodrigues (57) Commits Suicide by Jumping into Nethravati River
Mangaluru: Ernest Joseph Rodrigues, aged 57, committed suicide by jumping into the Nethravati river, near Bantwal on Sunday, 13 January 2019 at 12 noon. After his body was retrieved by the police it was taken to Wenlock Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Ernest residing near to Rosario Cathedral, Mangaluru was managing a Medical shop named “J & J De Chane Agency and Medicals Chemists and Druggists” in Milagres Mansion, Hampankatta, Mangaluru, a business that was established in 1960, along with his brother. The actual reason for Ernest to commit suicide is not known, but a few shop owners close to his medical shop say that Ernest was a little upset about his brother’s illness. and also that the business was dull, and it was hard to manage the shop also due to the enormous increase in the rent which the Milagre Mansion management have sent the notice of rent increase. “It’s better to die than to live”, was the comments made by Ernest to some of these shop owners. But the actual reason for his death is yet to be ascertained.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Ernest’s son Ian Rodrigues, aged 19, studying at St Aloysius, Mangaluru said, “My dad didn’t show any signs of depression, but since few days he was quiet and didn’t speak much. We are all devastated by the extreme step taken by our father. We also don’t know the reason for him to commit suicide”.
Ernest Rodrigues leaves behind his Mother, Wife Neena, three sons- Ian (19), Nishan (16) studying in St Aloysius PUC, Mangaluru, and Ethan (13) studying in Milagres School, Mangaluru.
Regarding the funeral details, Ernest’s body will be brought to his residence “Fathima Garden”, Rosario Cathedral Compound, Mangaluru for viewing between 9 am-10 am on Tuesday, 15 January 2019. Funeral cortege leaves the residence at 10 am, followed by mass at Jeppu Cemetary, Mangaluru at 10.30 am.
