Former Bishop of Chikkamagaluru John Baptist Sequeira Passes Away
Bengaluru: Most Rev. John Baptist Sequeira, the former Bishop of Chikkamagaluru passed away on October 9, 2019, at 11:20 p.m. due to old age ailments at the Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Hosur Road, Bangalore. He was 89.
The Funeral Service will be held in Bangalore on October 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Home for the Aged (Little Sisters of the Poor), Bangalore. Thereafter, the burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Parish Cemetery on Hosur Road.
Bishop J. B. Sequeira was born on July 23, 1930, and ordained priest on April 15, 1958. He was appointed the second Bishop of Chikkamagaluru on January 26, 1987, at the age of 56. He served as a Professor and Rector of St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore. Having attained the superannuation, he relinquished the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Chikkamagaluru on December 2, 2006, at the age of 76. He was a priest for 61 years and a Bishop for 32 years. A press statement to this effect was released by PRO of the Archdiocese, Bengaluru.
Archbishop Peter Machado, Metropolitan Archbishop of Bangalore and President of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council, expressed his deep condolences to Bishop T. Anthony Swamy, Bishop of Chikkamagaluru and to all the priests, religious and lay faithful of the diocese.
