Freedom! Locked Up by Mother against her Wish for 2 Years, Kerala Lass now Joins Relatives in Hometown

Mangaluru: Recalling the story published in our website on 7 May 2018 {Cops Rescue Young Kerala Lady Locked Up by Her Mother in a Home in City}, it is now learnt that the young lady has been reunited with her relatives in Kerala-thanks to the City Magistrate Court, Mangaluru City Police and Social Media, who played an important role in rescuing and now letting this lass to enjoy her freedom.

Recalling the incident, which happened in the month of May, a 24-year-old Kerala woman allegedly locked up in a house by her mother for a year was rescued by police from a rented house in Barke-Mangaluru owned by a local RSS leader, and was then shifted to a rehabilitation centre. The girl’s mother was booked for forceful detention, since she allegedly confined her daughter to a room after she learnt of her friendship with a man from another community. Two months earlier before 24-year-old victim from Thrissur-Kerala was rescued by the cops, she had released a video from an undisclosed location in Mangaluru, explaining how she was subjected to torture by right-wing men.

In the video, widely circulated on social media and aired by a Malayalam channel, the woman alleged that RSS and BJP workers were harassing her and she was illegally detained in a BJP/RSS leader’s house. Soon after the video went viral, the city police arrested the accused and registered an FIR at the Mangaluru City Women’s Police Station. The police then produced the girl and accused before the II CJM Court. {More details on this story please click on the earlier article link below} Now this young lady is free after her case was heard in the City court. Sources reveal that Sushma (name changed) was freed and reunited with the relatives of her deceased father in Thrissur, Kerala, on Friday, 25 May 2018 as per her wish.

Pertaining to the verdict in this case, the order from the II chief judicial magistrate court in Mangaluru reads “It is pertinent to note that there is no dispute that the victim is an adult, and that she cannot be detained in any counselling centre, as provided under law. As per the settled principle of law, any girl who has attained adulthood is at liberty to go anywhere, and she cannot be detained under the care and custody of anybody including their parents,”. Also, the court, paying heed to the request of the police and the victim, has agreed to transfer the case to Kerala, as the girl was kidnapped from Kerala.

While proceeding with the case, the Court also observed and stated -“After hearing both sides and perusing the materials available on record, it is clear that earlier several incidents took place within the jurisdiction of the Guruvayoor police station, and later the victim and her boyfriend came to Mangaluru, and a case was registered. Therefore, if the entire case is transferred to the Guruvayoor police station, no hardship will be caused to the accused, as she is also a resident of Guruvayoor jurisdiction. So it is just and proper to transfer the case to Guruvayoor police station which is having the jurisdiction,”.

According to the advocate representing the girl, Sushma will be meeting the Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and also DGP Lokanath Behera on Tuesday, 29 May 2018 and file a fresh complaint against her mother and other accused. Her advocate speaking to the media has said “She has sought an appointment with the Chief Minister and DGP. We will institute a fresh complaint against her mother, the mother’s paramour, a few members of the RSS and VHP and the doctor and the hospital in Kerala, that connived with the mother to show she was mentally-challenged, as well as against her abductors,”
