Gang of Women Pickpockets Targetting Bus Passengers Arrested within 12 Hours of Crime

Udupi: The Udupi police have arrested a gang of pickpockets within 12 hours of the crime on October 21.

The arrested have been identified as Latha, Kavitha and Sabitha from Ballari.

According to the police on October 20, at around 6 pm, Archana Rao was travelling in a city bus from Udupi bus stand to Kunjibettu. All the three women, along with a child, boarded the bus at Kadiyali. Archana Rao got the child to sit on her lap as all the three women stood near her. Without Archana’s knowledge, the women stole Archana’s purse containing 4 ATM cards, Voter ID, other documents including Rs 5000 cash from her bag. When Archana Rao reached home, she found her purse missing.

Meantime, the women had withdrawn cash Rs 25,000 using the ATM pin, which was written on a paper. Archana immediately filed a complaint in the Manipal Police station.

Based on the complaint the Udupi Town, Traffic police, Manipal, Kaup and Padubidri police got into action and monitored the activities of the accused. They also collected information from the auto and bus drivers. As the police were investigating, they found that three tickets were booked to Dharwad.

On October 21, all the three accused were arrested by the police. The police recovered Rs 32,400 cash, two mobile phones and 2 ATM cards from their possession.

Under the direction of SP Vishnuvardhan IPS and the able guidance of Additional SP Kumarachandra, ASP Udupi sub-division SP T R Jaishankar, the operation was carried out by the Udupi Circle Inspector Manjunath, PI Manipal Manjunath, Udupi Town PSI Shaktivelu E and Vasappa Naik, ASI Harish, Lokesh, Riyaz Ahmed, Harsha , Umesh, Imran, Santhosh Rathod, Vishwanath Shetty, Sushma, Vidya, Roopa, Ashok and Raghavendra.
