Got Buthai? Fish Eaters get Free Washed Away Sardines on Ullal Beach

Mangaluru: Hundreds of thousands of fish have washed up on Ullal beach on Wednesday. The fish are said to be sardines. They stretch as far as the eye can see. This massive shoal of sardines covered a large part of the beach- and many of them are buried under the sand. The sardines were first spotted by beachgoers who posted pictures on social media, which attracted more people to come to the beach and grab all these sardines. It is learnt that people also came in vehicles and grabbed all these free fishes lying on the shore- some bagged them in plastic and paper bags. And this has been happening for the last couple days, where sardines, some live being washed away onto the shore.

People taking a morning stroll on the shores were in for a pleasant surprise when they found hundreds of sardine fish washed ashore and that too alive, which is a rare sight. The walkers initially thought that the fish might be dead but a closer look revealed that there were still alive. These washed away sardines were not only seen at Ullal seashore but locals say they found them even at Kaiko, Mogaveerapatna, Kiliriyanagar and Someshwar seashore, near to Ullal.

Making the most of it, the surprised fish eaters wasted no time in grabbing any plastic and paper found lying around and collected as much fish as they could hold. Some even informed their friends who rushed to the beach for the free fish. Many found nothing strange with the fish found on the shore.

They said it happened when some fish lose their way from their group only to be washed off onto the shore by the strong tides. On the other hand, a few termed it as a warning of something bad to happen. According to a local fisherman, such a kind of scene happened five years ago, when thousands of sardines were found on the Ullal beach. This morning they again drew curious onlookers keen to witness this unusual sight. Some think that the fish might have been dumped by a fishing vessel after its nets got overloaded. The stranding are being investigated by fisheries dept and conservation authority.
