Govt will Regularise Pourakarmikas soon – KSSKDC Chairman S Mareppa

Udupi: S Mareppa, chairman of the Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Development Corporation, said on Thursday October 12 that the government will regularise pourakarmikas soon and their wages will be paid directly by the municipal corporations.

He was speaking to the media persons after the review meeting held at the DC Office; he said that a government order has to be issued and it will take some time to be implemented. The State government has made it clear that it is abolishing the system of hiring Pourakarmikas on contract.

The corporation would provide better health care and education to their children to make them financially sound. The civic workers serving on contract basis across the state are not getting the minimum wages that are entitled to them. The contractor fails to provide even PF facilities to the labourers. I have directed the urban local bodies to suspend such tenders and blacklist such contractors who fail to provide minimum wages to the civic workers.

The corporation was giving financial aid for the children of safai karmacharis. Under the direct loan scheme also, students can avail up to Rs 2 lakh from the banks for education. “For ensuring loans to safai karmacharis, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to deposit Rs 100 crore as security,” he said.

The commission has provided Rs 6 lakh each as grant for the construction of the group housing schemes for the pourakarmikas and safai karamcharis and the remaining Rs 1.5 lakh would be provided as loan for the construction of the houses, which the beneficiary pourakarmikas or safai karamcharis should have to pay in instalments.

Nine schemes have been framed under the corporation for the development of safai karmacharis. These schemes focus on education, health, awareness, housing, women’s empowerment and skill development among others benefits.
