If India Got IPL, St Aloysius College Got APL? Aloysius Premier League 2K18 -Season 1 Launched- Aloysius United Through Cricket!
Mangaluru: Yes, the IPL kind of Cricket fever is back in Town, and this time at the St Aloysius Centenary Ground-Mangaluru, when St Aloysius College (Autonomous)-Mangaluru in association with Physical Education Dept, and Students Council of SAC organized the FIRST Season of the Äloysius Premier League 2K18 (APL) played on St Aloysius centenary Ground-Mangaluru on 23 and 24 December 2018. Just like the IPL, here the APL has become a proper platform for the upcoming cricket talents of the SAC students to step into greater heights in the cricket field. Eight teams participated in the Overarm Cricket Tournament, with eight overs each.
The league tournament consisted of 8 franchises namely Detroit Bulls; Young Tuluvas; Mentho Warriors; Raptors XI; Soaring Sixers; City Arena; Royal Falcons; Red Backs. The event began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song by the students of SAC led y Miss Valezina D’souza and group. The tournament was inaugurated by A M Narahari-Registrar of SAC, along with Fr Praveen Martis SJ -Principal SAC, Dr Dinesh Nayak- Chairman of APL; and Convener Rahul Suvarna. Event coordinators Alan D’costa and Siyaq, and Student Council president Relston Lobo were also present.
Addressing the gathering chief guest A M Narahari said, ” I am happy to note that this is First season of the APL, which is unique in a college. Many who have played on this ground have made it in the national test cricket, namely K L Rahul, Sanath Kumar and others. Cricket is a passionate and unpredictable game – Ultimately the winner comes out with a sportsman spirit. First of all you should all know that winning in this tournament is not important, but participating in it is. You are all winners already by taking the bold step in coming forward to fight in this tournament. You need to play with determination and enthusiasm, play with smile on your face and anxiousness- and not in a sober and grumpy attitude. You have all come here to unleash your sporting talents, so do it with love and determination. This is a ground when India Cricketer K L Rahul played and has now reached greater heights in the cricket field. May be you could also be one of the budding cricketer of India. Wish you all best of luck in both the tournaments-play with faith and truth, don’t argue or blame the umpires, play with a motto and dream to win. If you don’t win this time it’s okay, you’ll more chances later- Try, try and you’ll succeed. All the best”
Also speaking on the occasion Fr Praveen Martis SJ said, ” I am happy to note that a First of its kind APL is played on this ground, where Indian cricketer who was our student, K L Rahul had played, and has now become an Indian cricket star. Just like the chief guest said, “Winning is not important, participating is important”. You should all follow in the footsteps of K L Rahul, and thus look forward to be like him, and play in the Indian Cricket Team. If you have determination and dedication, anything is possible. Aloysius is known for its brand, but in the sports we are yet to reach higher levels. We need to pave a way for a new era. This institution apart from academics has provided all the facilities when it comes to sports activities, and many of our students have shined and brought laurels and fame to our institute. Let APL be a role model for other tournaments also. I wish you all success in the tournament”.
The tournament began with an exhibition match between the Students Council Team and Teachers Team, in which the students council team won. In the final match between Soaring Sixers and City Arena, the champions were Soaring Sixers, where City Arena were runners up. Man of the match was Anson Noronha; Best Batsman was Shawn Noronha; Best Bowler- Ajith Kurian; Player of the tournament- Shawn Noronha. The prizes were distributed to the winners by chief guest Mithun Rai- President of Youth Congress, along with guest of honor Dr Alwyn D’sa-Professor at SAC and Fr Praveen Martis SJ
The vote of thanks was Delivered by SAC student Miss Shrsuti during the inauguration, and Dr Dinesh Nayak during the valedictory respectively, while the event was compered by student Miss Divya Dunha. APL -2018 Winners received Trophy, along with Rs 10,000 cash prize, and Runners Up with trophy and Rs 6000 cash.
