Inspired By Life Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangaluru (MCODS) hosts the Prestigious Second ‘Student Conference of Research in Education (SCoRE 2.0) with Workshops & Lectures

Mangaluru: The Student Conference of Research in Education (SCoRE 2.0) is an initiative by Manipal Academy of Higher Education Student Research Forum (MAHESRF) of MCODS, Mangaluru to encourage and recognize undergraduate student research in the field of dentistry. The two day conference scheduled for 1st & 2nd March 2019 had a varied set of events, lectures and pre-conference hands-on workshops as well as scientific paper and poster presentations for the participants. MAHESRF is a student body organization where a platform is provided for spreading awareness about opportunities and steps involved in structured research work by organizing lectures, talks and seminars. The main aim of MAHESRF is to direct and channelize students in the right path which will benefit them in their research work.

SCoRE 2.0 attracted over 500 students from nearly 28 colleges from all over India, where the Conference included events like Dental Olympics,Educational Video Presentation, Health Education Role Play and much more. Enthusiastic participation in the field of research is clearly reflected by submission of 138e-Poster and 42 Paper presentation by the participants. During the Scientific presentation, apart from Paper & E-Poster Presentations, there were Keynote Lecture & Guest Lectures Capsule workshops (Hands On) Health Education Role Play Pre Conference Workshops (Hands On) and other.

Even though the workshops were held at various locations of KMC on 1 March 2019, the inauguration was held at TMA Pai Convention Centre on 2 March 2019. In his welcome address Dr Dilip Naik-the Dean of MCODS said, “It is thrilling to see that over 500 participants from 28 colleges are taking part in this conference, a lot more than the First SCoRE conference. Started in 1987, MCODS Mangaluru has evolved over the past 32 years to occupy a cherished place in the minds of the students, faculty and alumni. Owing to an excellent track record of academic performance, it has consistently been a preferred choice of students wanting to pursue their under-graduation in dentistry as well as in various disciplines of post-graduation”.

“A confident and enthusiastic team of teaching faculty backed by the management’s commitment to providing good infrastructure ensures that a student leaves the portals of this institution well-armed with proficiency, skills, knowledge and above-all a supreme sense of confidence to tackle the future head-on. A well-equipped central library, modern classrooms and laboratories with audio-visual and computing facilities combine to add to the joy of learning at MCODS. A state-of-the-art recreational and indoor sports arena, Marena, enable a student to develop a holistic personality with a touch of multiculturalism. Total transparency in the processes of admission, evaluation, and mentoring adds to the core strength of this institution that is one of the first dental colleges in India to receive the ISO certification for standards in teaching and health care. Many students get inspired to join the growing ranks of MCODS successful students. And this Conference is yet another successful venture of MCODS, and I am sure that all you will take back home good memories and knowledge after the conference” added Dr Naik.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr H Vinod Bhat-Vice Chancellor-MAHE who inaugurated SCoRE 2.0 by lighting the traditional lamp, joined by guests of honour namely- Dr V Surendra Shetty-Pro Vice Chancellor-MAHE-Mangaluru, Ms Dr Poornima Baliga- Pro Vice Chancellor (Faculty of Health sciences) MAHE, along with Dr Dilip Naik, Dr Ravikiran Ongole-Professor and Head of Oral Medicine and Radiology, and also Staff Mentor, Dr Paavas Sharma- President of MAHE Students Research Forum and Dr Rashi Bhasin- Vice President of MAHE Students Research Forum.

In His Inaugural address Dr H Vinod Bhat said, “What a surprise to see a large number of participants this year, which were not even half the number when I graced the First SCoRE conference. Good progress in the field of research I guess, that students are taking good interest and enthusiasm to participate in such conferences, which is very much needed in the present world of Dentistry field. The present students have got their priorities right, making Research as part of their curricular. Institution are recognized in this field when research are prioritized. Last year nearly 2300 research papers were out in this field, of which 25% of the papers were from the student population”.

“Nowadays Dental students don’t stop after receiving their B DS degree, they want to move forward in doing their Masters/Ph D in the field. You need to look at options where you can reach greater heights and not be happy with B DS status. I feel happy to say that MAHE is ranked between 352-400 in the World in medical field, whereas University of Dental-HongKong is the 5th in the world. Wouldn’t be nice if MCODS of MAHE also reaches a top level in the world, and yes you can do it through various research work. Wishing all of you a knowledgeable and effective time during the conference, where you can learn more about the current advancement in the dentistry field” added Dr Bhat.

The Conference Souvenir ( CD Abstract) was released by the Chief guest during the occasion. Dr Joanna Baptist – Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery read out the names of the Research Award winners, who were presented with the Awards comprising of Cash and Certificate, by the Dr Vinod Bhat and Dr Poornima Baliga. Power point presentation of SCoRE 2.0 – a New Chapter was done by Ms Paavas Sharma, President of MAHESRF, while introduction of the chief guest was done by Ms Sunayana Peddi-Treasurer of MAHESRF, MCODS-Mangaluru. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dt Ravikiran Ongole, while the programme was compered by Dr Adithi Sinha of MCODS, Mangaluru.

The Conference had a bevy of professional keynote speakers on various subjects, namely Dr Alben Sigamani, Group Head-Clinical Research, Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd Bengaluru on the topic “Becoming a Clinician Scientist-A Journey of a Lifetime”; Dr Arun Shanbagh-Chief Innovation Officer-MAHE spoke on “The Big Rocks in Our Life”; Dr Praveen Birur, Professor and Head, KLE Dental College, Bengaluru spoke on “Integrating Health & Technology in Early Oral Cancer Detection”; other speaker included Dr Abraham Babu.

The Valedictory ceremony was held on 2 March at 4 pm, with Dr Bharti Chogtu M-Deputy Director, Research (Health Sciences) . With insightful teachings from all these professional speakers, educational workshops by qualified resource persons and active participation by all the 500 plus enthusiastic delegates, SCoRE 2.0 did set a new benchmark in the Student Research Education. Kudos to Dean Dr Dilip Naik for his energetic and strong leadership in leading his flock of students into the right path of dentistry education, and also in encouraging them to organize this successful Conference.
