Installing CCTV Plans Out- Fencing In? Netravathi Bridge Gets Fencing To Stop Suicides-A Dumb Solution!

Installing CCTV Plans Out, Instead Fencing In? Netravati Bridge Gets Fencing To Stop Suicides! Seems Like A Dumb Solution. OMG- isn’t it strange that our elected leaders come up with dumb ideas to rectify a issue/solution- and use public or govt money on such silly projects. There are people dying, there are people suffering due to Corona-virus- instead of providing better facilities, beds, medicine etc for such persons, our Netas are worried about people who are willing to die. Fencing a bridge is not a right solution to stop suicides, but proper awareness programmes, counseling, motivation, prayers etc can only stop someone from taking the extreme step. This project is nothing but to fill the pockets of our elected leaders, engineers, contractor and middlemen.

Mangaluru: “CALLING and ALERTING all people who are on the verge of committing suicide- As of 4 July, work has started to FENCE the entire stretch of Ullal Nethravathi Bridge on both sides. So, in few weeks or so, your only option to jump off a Bridge will be Kulur Bridge, Gurpur Bridge, Panemangaluru Bridge, and few other bridges. Sorry, Netravathi Bridge will not be helpful”. Do you think by fencing Netravathi Bridge will do any good for a person who has decided top commit suicide, which is no doubt, a CRIME. Are our Netas or district authorities hooked on stupidity or what, to come up with such a dumb solution to stop future suicides. With so many suicides taking place recently, where people end their distressed life by hanging to a ceiling fan- so what would be our Netas solution for this? Stop selling ceiling fans or what or make a rule that all new houses or flats stop using ceiling fans, instead use Air Conditioners?

Earlier our beloved and popular MLA Vedavyas Kamath had planned to install CCTV’s all around the stretch of Netravathi Bridge, which would have cost tax payers four time more than the fencing plan now- but still was a much more dumb solution. How would a CCTV stop a person from jumping off the bridge, when he/she has decided to end their life. Probably they would stare at the camera, wave goodbye, and, say Adios to their life and world? OMG- isn’t it strange that our elected leaders come up with dumb ideas to rectify a issue/solution- and use public or govt money on such silly projects. There are people dying, there are people suffering due to Corona virus-instead of providing better facilities, beds, medicine etc for such persons, our Netas are worried about people who are willing to die. Fencing a bridge is not a right solution to stop suicides, instead proper awareness programmes, counseling, motivation, prayers etc can only stop someone from taking the extreme step.

Frankly speaking, fencing Netravathi Bridge is waste of public tax payers money and also height of stupidity. Okay, imagine that the Netravathi bridge is fenced, but a person whom is determined to die, may use the nearby railway bridge, or even walk down and jump into the river- so what’s the solution for this? And what if a person chooses other bridges like Kulur, Gurpur, Anyway, some one will make some money out of this major development project during this very difficult time- right from the ministers, MLA’s, corrupt officials, engineers and contractors. Apart from that, this fencing of bridge project is nothing but a useless solution to curb a few suicides that take place every year. So is it worth spending lakhs or few crores showing concern towards few people who commit suicide from this popular Netravathi bridge, also nicknamed as “Suicide Spot”?

Yours Truly, of Team Mangalorean who visited the bridge a few minutes ago, was surprised to see the height of the fence (a small portion of the fence has been blessed with pooja and flowers and erected), anyone can climb over it and still jump off the bridge. Also the gaps in the fence are quite big enough for someone to put their feet inside, and climb and jump off. So what good is this fencing? Who is the smart engineer or a contractor who designed this unscientific and useless fence? I only wish that this report will awaken the concerned people behind this project, and see that the design etc are rectified, if not the money spent on this project, will go down the drain? My humble advise to the concerned people behind this project – “BE POSITIVE IN LIFE”!

Fencing should be like the one above which Railway Dept has erected……..

…….and NOT like the one the City Administration is planning to erect

It should be noted that, any person who decides to end his or her life, no one can stop them. Committing suicide by jumping off the bridge into the river is just one among many other ways- suicide is committed by consuming poison, hanging, slitting throat, jumping off a building, lying on a railway track in the path of a moving train etc etc. So why all this pity shown by the authorities only to the ones who commit suicide by jumping of Netravathi Bridge? How about the same authorities come up with solutions which can stop suicides from many other ways. And just imagine how long it will take to fence the total length of this bridge which is 830 meters one side- and you’ll have to fence it on four sides-therefore 830 mts x 4, which is 3320 metres. Hope the completion of fencing the bridge will not beat the record of Pumpwell flyover, if the work is given to Navayuga Engineering Ltd?

It should also be noted that present modern issues need modern and suitable solutions, and not like the one, which is highlighted here. Everyone has problems in life, but taking an extreme step and ending life is an act of nothing but cowardliness, and also a crime. Such distress people need to overcome their problems by efforts, patience, courage, take counseling, advices, etc- and not end their life through suicide. There is always hope and cure for problems, but if people go out of their way, become stubborn, and decide to end life- then it’s their fault, and why others should take pity on them. I may sound rude, but when someone is spending our hard earned money on foolish projects it hurts and rude words automatically come out of your mouth. Sorry, can’t help!

The way this project has been planned is totally not well-planned and very unscientific. The height and the broad gaps in the fence, is enough for anyone to climb and jump off the bridge and end lives. So what kind of madness is this in order to stop suicides? A person who is hell bent on committing suicide will do it somehow somewhere, it doesn’t have to only Netravathi Bridge. Just because now that a fence will prevent someone from jumping off the bridge, will the person who has already decided to end his life, will change his mind? No way? He or she will find some other bridge or a different way to commit suicide.

Its a fact that ever since the suicide of Cafe Coffee Day owner Siddharth in 2019, many have followed in his footsteps and have ended their lives by jumping off from Netravathi Bridge, which is called as a “Suicide Spot”- but it doesn’t mean that the Netas and other authorities use tax payers hard earned money to solve this sitaution. Totally wrong and totally a dumb solution. Sources reveal that the decision to fence the bridge was taken after many had pressurized the MLA Vedavyas Kamath and the city administration to put up fences on all four sides of the bridge, thereby stop people from jumping into the river and kill themselves. People should raise their voices and stop this project immediately, which is nothing but wasting tax payers hard earned money, and added to that, the plan and design of the fencing is totally unscientific and not safe in stopping suicides-Period?

  1. Hahaha very good article. Its humorous and very funny too. Our government knows lot of people are depress and want to end their lives.

  2. I think our dear Alfi-maam went overboard on criticism.. To a certain degree, I agree it is dumb. But to say “This project is nothing but to fill the pockets of our elected leaders, engineers, contractor and middlemen.” – that I don’t buy just looking at this. How much money can they make out of it unless the cost has been shown disproportionately high? If that is the case, that is a corruption issue.
I think it is high time we stop overly criticize doing something. I think something is better than nothing. If this ‘faulty’ fence stops at least a few people from committing suicide. BTW I think Suicide is legally decriminalized but I agree it is ‘morally criminal’ – not sure if that is the proper usage of the term.

But I really appreciate you taking time and effort to find the right way to ‘fence’. That is great responsible journalism. Thank you from a humble reader.

  3. Dont know of suicides,,But it may help By avoiding some dumb peoples act of throwing thrash from running vehicles into the river.
