Issue of Law Violation by Auto-rickshaw drivers dominates SP Phone-in programme
Udupi: After 55 days of break for the assembly elections, the district Superintendent of Police held his weekly phone-in programme at the district police headquarters on Friday, May 25. The issue of illegal auto rickshaws and autos not using meters dominated the phone-in programme.
During the phone-in programme, the majority of calls received were about irregularities of auto-rickshaws in the district. Many auto rickshaws are running illegally. Many auto-drivers have not installed meters and some who have it are not using it. Instead, they are demanding much more than the actual fare. The SP replied that the district police will take strict action against those violating the law.
Another caller complained that a hotelier in Brahmavar has been releasing wastewater into the public drainage. The complainant alleged that despite several complaints to the local authorities, no action has been taken. The SP assured that the SI of the concerned police station will visit the place and take action.
Another caller from Barkur said that heavy vehicles running on the Barkur-Jannadi bridge have caused damage to the bridge. SP Nimbargi promised the caller that the police would visit the place and take necessary action.
A caller from Manipal said that many two-wheeler riders are not wearing helmets and ride in a rash manner in Manipal especially during the morning and evenings. Nimbargi said that the police staff would keep a vigil to prevent such incidents.
Callers also highlighted the matka menace which is at a peak. Increased gambling activities in the district in Gangolli, Sankaaling for prompt action. One caller said that liquor is illegally being sold in a shop in Brahmavar which leads to problems in the society. SP directed the concerned officials of Brahmavar to take action.
A caller from Gundibailu complemented the district police for efficiently handling traffic in Kalasanka and advised the district SP to open a district police Facebook account which will help the people to give complaints. SP Nimbargi thanked the caller and agreed to open a Facebook page.
A caller from Billady under Shankernarayana police station limits said that big boulders were being illegally transported in lorries without using safety measures. Nimbargi said that the police staff would keep a vigil to prevent such incidents.
Later speaking to the mediaperons, SP Nimbargi said that 20 calls were received during the Phone-in programme and there was a good response from the public.
He said that in the last 55 days, 19 matka, 16 gambling, 4 illegal liquor, 7 NDPS, 158 Cotpa, 142 Drink and Drive, 641 shrill horns, 215 use of mobiles while driving, 9150 driving without wearing the helmet, 477 over speed and 12779 other motor violation cases have been booked.
