Kadri Gopalnath’s Saxophone Replica Stolen from Mallikatta Park
Mangaluru: A replica of a saxophone installed at Mallikatta Park in memory of legendary saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath has reportedly been stolen, triggering concern among local residents and civic representatives.
Mallikatta Park, developed a few years ago at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh, was conceived as a public space featuring, among other attractions, a memorial pedestal dedicated to Kadri Gopalnath. A saxophone replica placed within a glass enclosure at the site served as a tribute to the iconic musician and quickly became one of the park’s notable highlights for visitors.
According to reports, the park has seen a steady decline in maintenance in recent years due to a shortage of funds, leaving the premises in a neglected condition. It is now alleged that the saxophone replica went missing about a week ago, though the theft has only recently come to light.
Local corporator Kadri Manohar Shetty has brought the matter to the notice of the Kadri Police. Following the complaint, police have initiated an investigation to trace the missing installation and identify those responsible for the theft. However, no significant breakthrough has been reported so far.
The incident has raised concerns over the security and upkeep of public memorials, particularly those created to honour cultural icons. Residents and admirers of Kadri Gopalnath have expressed disappointment over the alleged theft of a symbol meant to preserve the musician’s legacy.
Authorities are expected to continue their inquiry into the matter.
