Karkala: Like leopards, bisons are also in the news in the taluk for some time.

When Xavier Rebello of Majalakodi in Belmannu village, went to irrigate his paddy fields on early Sunday morning. he had a surprise in store.

He observed that a huge bison had landed in the open, unprotected well in the middle of his farm. Because of silt in the well, it could not extricate itself. He informed the local elected representatives at once, who in turn passed the information to the forest officials in Karkala.

Because of its size and weight, it was not possible for the people around to pull it out. Hence an earth-moving equipment was drafted and earth at one of the sides of the well was levelled to create a passage for the animal.

As it climbed up slowly, it appeared to be in a state of starvation and looked emaciated. It marched a field and began grazing there, without offering any resistance. One of its legs carried wounds caused by a wire stuck on it. It was removed and the wounds were cleaned by a veterinarian who arrived at the spot.

Obviously because of weakness and pain, the bison refused to go away when the forest personnel tried to drive it to the forest. Finally it was transported to Bola and released in the reserve forest there.
