Mangaluru : On the outset Team Mangalorean would like to congratulate Karthik Kateel for his great achievement in training over 1.6 lakh female students/adults on self-defence through the “Swaraksha for Women” project. Team Mangalorean has been closely associated with Karthik since his first event which took place at Besant Women’s College on 8 August 2014, and since then has been covering most of his events – and we feel proud to to note that He has trained over 1.6 lakh women in six years, which is a great achievement. Kudos galore, Karthik! His dad, Prof. Suresh Kateel ( Professor, Dept of History at SDPTF College-Kateel), and mom Ms Shobhalatha, (a former Bharathanatyam artist, now a homemaker) have rendered full support. Karthik’s mother has been assisting/escorting him in all his events, throughout his journey through the last six years, teaching/training self-defence techniques to females.

Have you ever felt frightened or intimidated when out walking alone? Have you ever wondered what you should do if approached by an attacker? Have you ever worried about becoming yet another home invasion statistic? The sad reality is that we live in an increasingly violent society in which the fear of crime is ever-present. Personal safety has become an issue of importance for everyone, but especially for women. Concerned about this state of affairs, six times National and 16 times State winner in Martial Arts demonstrations, Martial Arts Guru Karthik S Kateel has been teaching self-defence techniques and safety seminars for the last six years. And recently he had also trained the police women belonging to Rani Abbakka Pade in Puttur/DK, under the direction of DK Superintendent of Police B M Laxmi Prasad, joined by Additional SP Dr Amathe Vikram.

The demand the young women saw for reliable safety information, coupled with the need to debunk widespread myths regarding self-defence measures, has convinced him to conduct more such training programmes, and www.mangalorean.com has been associated with Karthik S Kateel in his projects aimed for a good cause, especially for the safety of women. Karthik during his training sessions demonstrates serious self-defence techniques which would help girls/women during time of attack, rape and such kind of acts on them- and these useful techniques have been very much welcomed by the girls, who opt and promise to use them only during the time of attacks by strangers, and not use them on their brothers or male relatives/friends?.

At the end of every session, to entertain the gathering he also demonstrates some of his unique martial arts stunts which really wow the audience. During his sessions the whole gang of damsels/girls show some keen enthusiasm and interest throughout the programs, since he conducts them more lively and with wit.

The criminals primary strategy is to use the advantage of surprise. Studies have shown that criminals are adept at choosing targets who appear to be unaware of what is going on around them. By being aware of your surroundings and by projecting a force presence, many altercations which are commonplace on the street can be avoided. Your right to fight. Unfortunately, no matter how diligently we practice awareness and avoidance techniques, we may find ourselves in a physical confrontation. Whether or not you have self-defence training, and no matter what your age or physical condition, it is important to understand that you CAN and SHOULD defend yourself physically.

While martial arts/Karate are effective at building esteem and a healthier body, they are overrated for self defense. The reasons for this is that martial arts can be taught improperly as well as taking too much time and effort to really master. For more effective self defense tactics, women should look at empty-handed or unarmed fighting techniques, some of which are designed just for women. This type of empowerment training is also quite efficient as well as fierce: a good course can teach women to render their would-be assailant unconscious.

Recalling Kathik’s story how he stepped into the “Swaraksha for Women” project, he said , “Reading the news of harassment on women which appear frequently on newspapers and TV channels, I decided to do something to prevent such happenings, and so I formulated 5 techniques. First I taught these techniques to my mother, and when I was convinced that these techniques were very effective , I then decided to teach these in schools and colleges, and it did really work and I feel proud that I have done something good for the society, especially the women.

Karthik’s journey into this self-defence techniques training started on 8 August 2014, with the co operation of Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM, where he first taught these self defence techniques to nearly 400 students of Besant Womens College, Mangaluru, and ever since then he has never looked back. Presently he has trained more than 1.6 lakh female students of 501 institutions and 800 workshops around Karnataka “Swaraksha for Women” is a simple and effective 95 minutes self-defence training especially for women, which Karthik conducts along with the help of his mother Mrs. Shobhalatha.

During the training programme there are no kicks, No blocks, No punches are advocated. These techniques can be learnt and easily applied by a 11 year girl to 60 years women. This programme has been appreciated by Police dept, Doctors, Academicians and female students and they have all expressed their opinions. They have individually solved some of the cases related to the harassment. This training has gained wide publicity through the word of mouth from the Academicians and students. The programme was also conducted in the international famed institutions like NIMHANS, KIMS, RGICD, MAHAJANAS , TERRECIAN etc.

This techniques were choreographed on the basic of psychology and real incidents. So far Karthik has never asked for no financial support from government or sponsors and has not demanded a particular amount from the institutions. His main intention is to train the females in self-defence and get their appreciations- and that’s the gift he asks for. And on 7 March 2020, Lions Club District 317 (D) felicitated Karthik at Sadhana Achievers Day in Vamanjoor, in recognition for his tremendous work in the field of women empowerment by training 1.6 lakh girls and women in self defence, thereby saving number of girls/women from harassment/rape/atrocity etc
