KMC Hospital Attavar Hosts International Training Programme in HDR Brachytherapy
Mangaluru: The Department of Radiation Oncology at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru, a constituent unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), has successfully conducted an international training programme in High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy. The programme brought together radiation oncologists and medical physicists from Mauritius for structured training in advanced brachytherapy techniques and practices.
The programme was organised through an industry-academia collaboration involving Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, KMC Hospital, Attavar, and BEBIG Medical, a global provider of brachytherapy solutions. The collaboration combined the institution’s academic and clinical expertise with the technical knowledge and experience of the industry partner.
The Departments of Anaesthesiology and Radiodiagnosis at KMC, Mangaluru, also extended their support to the programme.
The training covered both clinical and technical aspects of contemporary HDR brachytherapy. Participants attended interactive sessions and hands-on training conducted by experienced faculty members from the Department of Radiation Oncology and the BEBIG Medical team.
Key areas covered during the programme included:
- Principles and clinical applications of HDR brachytherapy
- Patient selection, applicator techniques and procedural workflow
- Image-guided treatment planning and dosimetry
- Quality assurance and radiation safety
Hands-on training in brachytherapy equipment and treatment planning systems
Brachytherapy remains a key component of curative cancer treatment, particularly for gynaecological cancers, which account for a significant disease burden in the region. Developing skilled teams of clinicians and medical physicists is essential to expanding access to this specialised treatment.
Initiatives such as this international training programme help strengthen regional expertise, promote knowledge exchange and reinforce high standards of cancer care.
