Kundapur Child Death Case; Police Register Attempt to Murder Case against Mother

Udupi: “We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the mother in the death of the one-year-old child”, said Nisha James Superintendent of Police, Udupi District.

Speaking to media persons at the SP office on July 13, Nisha James said, “Initially, victim Sanvika’s mother Rekha, had informed the police that a masked intruder had entered the house from the backdoor and fled with her child during the wee hours of Thursday, July 11. She had chased the man and given up the chase after failing to cross the river along with her five-year-old son due to strong currents. The police team led by DySP Dinesh Kumar had launched a manhunt for the masked miscreant who had kidnapped the child Sanvika Naik. On Friday, July 12 morning the Body of the child was found in the Kubja River. Sanvika’s body was found stuck in the river about two km away from Kumtiberu near Kundapur”.

SP Nisha James further said, “During interrogation, Rekha revealed that she had jumped to the river with her daughter and son to commit suicide. However, she and her son survived while her daughter was washed away. We also found that Rekha has lost her mental stability. She was then sent for counseling to the physiatrist of Dr A V Baliga Hospital Doddangudde where she has been referred for further treatment. The family members have admitted her to Dr A V Baliga Hospital Doddangudde and treatment is on”.

Nisha James also said, “We have changed the sections in the complaint and added additional sections including CRPC 302, 307, 309 including an attempt to murder. Until now we have not arrested anyone including Rekha in this incident. We are waiting for the doctor’s report on Rekha’s health condition. The postmortem of the child was done at the KMC in Manipal and we are waiting for the report”.
