  • Two Students Seriously Injured; Youth Congress Leader Among Those Arrested

Udupi: Kundapur Rural Police arrested three persons, including two tipper lorry drivers and the owner of the site from which laterite soil was allegedly excavated, in connection with an accident involving two tipper lorries near Vishnumurthy Temple in Balkur village, Kundapur taluk.

Two college students travelling on a scooter sustained serious injuries in the accident.

The arrested persons are tipper drivers Nagaraj and Ratvij, and Ajith Shetty, the owner of the site from which the laterite soil was allegedly excavated. One of the arrested persons is reportedly a Youth Congress leader.

The accident occurred on State Highway 52 when two tipper lorries were travelling from Kundapur. According to the complaint, both vehicles were driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner.

When the driver of the leading tipper noticed an oncoming KSRTC bus, he slowed down. The second tipper, following the first, rammed into it and veered towards the right side of the road. It then collided with a scooter travelling from Kandlur towards Basrur, carrying two college students.

The scooter riders, T.K. Mohammed Shayan and Mohammed Rayan, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to KMC Hospital, Manipal, for treatment.

Police said the tipper involved in the accident was transporting laterite soil allegedly without the required permission. A case has been registered at Kundapur Rural Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
