‘Lower Bus Foot Board by Aug End’- DK DC orders Bus Operators

Mangaluru: Presiding over a grievance redressal meeting, Deputy Commissioner and Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Dr K.G. Jagadeesha reacted positively to long-pending grievances of general public with regard to non-issue of tickets and steep steps in private buses in the district. Presiding over the RTA meeting here, Dr Jagadeesha directed all private city bus operators to reduce the height of steps to the prescribed 32 cm (from ground level) by August-end and service bus operators by September-end. The operators would have to submit a certificate that they have complied with the directions by the first week of the subsequent month. Failure to comply with the directions would not just result in the imposition of fine; but more severe action, he said responding to the grievance of Ismail from Someshwara, in the outskirts of Mangaluru.

When a bus operator from rural area asked DC to relax the norms for rural buses, permitting them to increase the height by two cms up to 34, as in case of otherwise, it will be difficult to run the buses on rural routes filled with potholes- but the DC was reluctant in obliging his request. “If KSRTC can operate low floor buses in rural areas without any problems why can’t you,” DC asked the private bus operator.

With regard to the grievance of non-issue of tickets by city bus conductors, as raised by social activist G. Hanumanth Kamath, Dr Jagadeesha chided the transport department officials saying the issue should not have come to him at all. “The Regional Transport Officer should’ve ensured that all operators confirm with the law.” Rubbishing city bus operators complaint that electronic ticketing machines would fail many times, Jagadeesha wondered how service bus operators and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation could be managing the system without any fail. He directed the transport department to take stern action for failure to issue tickets.

Earlier, Kamath had alleged that the department would conduct some raids and book cases against a few buses for non-issue of tickets and other violations, just a few days ahead of RTA meeting. This is nothing but to pretend that the department is taking action, he had said. Meanwhile, Jagadeesha also directed private bus operators that drivers and conductors start wearing uniform within a month, responding to another grievance.

Why is the Conductor not issuing tickets from Electronic Ticketing Machine?

On the often repeated complaint of improper functioning of prepaid auto-rickshaw counter at Mangaluru Central Railway Station and absence of such a counter at Mangaluru Junction Station, Jagadeesha asked in-charge Senior RTO G.S. Hegde to write a letter to the City Police Commissioner, seeking his views on the demand for police personnel handling the counters. Kamath had said that everywhere else it is the police who are manning the counter and only in Mangaluru the system has been outsourced thereby causing severe inconvenience to general public. DC also asked the operators to ensure that the front door is used only by women passengers. Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy and others were present.

  1. Dear Mr.Jagadeesha, there is no punishment for Private Bus drivers in Mangalore because RTO Officials are hand in hand with Bus Owners. Money does the talking behind the RTO Office.
    1. Emergency Doors were installed on Buses. Still many do not have one.
2.There should not be seat blocking the Emergency Door, but many buses have seats.
3.Spare tires should not be inside the bus,but some do have.
4.Majority of Buses have high volume Horns even after RTO removing some.
5.Still Buses stop suddenly anywhere and everywhere to pick up passengers.
6.Many Buses do not have Brake Lights and cause severe problems when Bus stops suddenly.
7.Students Travel to School standing on the foot board and Buses overloaded causing the Bus to tilt on left side, thus it may fall when turning.
    8. Now new Game is started on city road one Bus trying to overtake front Bus by overspeeding. Do not wait till major disaster happening soon.
So Traffic Law is a Joke in Mangalore due to Corruption.
