Karnataka Rajya Mahila Duarjanya Virodhi Okkuta Join in Silent Solidarity for Justice to UP Rape Vcitim, on Saturday, 3 October at 5.30 pm a few blocks from Nanthoor Circle, Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Let me begin this report with a quote on whatsapp “Thank God, it was a GIRL that is why they quietly burnt Her, if it was a COW they would have BURNT the Whole City”? Recalling the incident- September 14, Manisha Valmiki, a 19 year Dalit girl was brutally gang-raped by four upper caste men in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. She died on 29th September, two weeks after battling with numerous fractures, spinal cord injuries and a mutilated tongue. In the specific case of Rape Vcitim, there has been a lack of solidarity of the feminist women’s movements to take up this issue so much so that it seems that that there is a systematic selective outrage for sexual crimes on women.

The vulnerability of a Dalit woman is also based on the factor that in case a sexual crime happens most of the people around them will not only ‘not’ listen to them but also not take up the issue further. This puts them at the weakest position as they do not have feminist pressure groups to hold their hands on an every day basis or at the times of atrocities. However, locally here in Mangaluru, women activists of Karnataka Rajya Mahila Duarjanya Virodhi Okkuta Join in Silent Solidarity for Justice to UP Rape Victim  , on Saturday, 3 October, at 5.30 pm a few blocks from Nanthoor Circle, Mangaluru. Nearly 50 women stood together silently in order to bring justice to this young woman.

It is time for members from the society to not make the Dalit women just an ‘object of their study’ but also ask important questions in times of brutal sexual crimes against them. We have to support Dalit women in things as basic as lodging an FIR which can actually become the most difficult task because in the case of the atrocities of Dalit women the obstacles are far more than in the case of other women. The sad part is that the justice system in India makes it impossible for a Dalit woman to lodge her complaint in a Police station and when it is combined by the happening of a sexual crime, the system fails them completely. And so forth the obstacles continue. And in such circumstances, the REAL women organization, like Karnataka Rajya Mahila Duarjanya Virodhi Okkuta come forward and will raise their voices, which should be appreciated by all.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Mrs Vidya Dinker , a dedicated and determined activist who fights for the rights of women said, “Yet another young girl was brutally gang raped in Hathras, UP. It took two weeks for the case to come out in the open. Even years after the Nirbhaya case, so many rapes happen every day. Majority of them go unreported. It is only when the victim is mutilated and killed, we wake up. Enough is enough. We have to hold the perpetrators accountable so that such a thing never happens again. We have to build a society that is safe for our girls and women. It is our responsibility to stand up and demand justice for Rape Vcitim from Hathras and the many Rape Vcitims whose plight never makes it out into the open. We the members of the Karnataka Rajya Mahila Daurjanya Virodhi Okkuta condemn this inhuman act. Therefore we planned to silently stand together in solidarity with the Hathras rape victim, with majority of us wearing  white outfits as we demand that speedy justice be served” .
