Man Arrested in Rape and Murder of 50-year-old Woman in Bantwal

Mangaluru: A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 50-year-old woman from Balepuni Village, Bantwal Taluk on October 15.

The arrested has been identified as Mohd Ashraf (30) from Manjeshwar, Kasargod district.

According to the police, the accused Mohd Ashraf who was working in Balepuni Village, Bantwal had collected all the information about the woman who was a spinster and staying alone at the Balleri House. After confirming that the woman was staying alone in her house, on September 24, at around 9:30 am, Mohd Ashraf came by scooter, entered the woman’s house, raped and killed her. He then burnt the woman’s body and fled with Rs 18,000 cash and gold ear-rings.

On September 24, when the woman’s relatives called her, there was no response. Getting suspicious they went to her house, but the door was locked. When they peeped into the house from the backside window, they found the body of the woman burnt and lying on the floor.

They then informed the Konaje Police who rushed to the spot and broke open the door. The burnt body of the woman was lying on the floor. In this connection, a case was registered in the Konaje Police Station. A special team led by the ACP Mangaluru South Sub-Division Ranjeet Kumar Bhandaru IPS was formed to nab the accused. On October 15, the team was successful in tracing and arresting the accused. The accused, after murdering the woman had tried to destroy the evidence.

As per the directions of the Commissioner of Police Mangaluru City Vikash Kumar, IPS, and under the guidance of DCP Law and Order Arunangshu Giri and DCP Crime and Traffic Vinay Gaonkar, the operation was carried out by the ACP Mangaluru South Sub Division Ranjeet Kumar Bhandaru IPS and team. The accused was produced before the court and was taken into Police custody for further investigations.
