Man from Shirva Arrested for giving Triple Talaq on Facebook

Udupi: A man was arrested in Shirva for giving triple talaq to his wife on Facebook on August 8.

The arrested has been identified as Sheikh Mohammed Saleem (38), a resident of Shirva.

According to the Shirva Police, Sheikh Mohammed Saleem’s wife Sapnaz filed a complaint on Friday, August 7 in which she alleged that her husband Sheikh Mohammed Saleem, whom she had married in September 2010, divorced by uttering triple talaq.

In her complaint, Sapnaz has stated that she, along with Sheikh Mohammed Saleem and her daughter Anas reside in Saudi Arabia. On August 3, Sheikh Mohammed Saleem leaving Sapnaz and Anas in Saudi left to Mumbai with another woman. Later he sent her a message and also uploaded the talaq three times on Facebook.

After seeing the Facebook Status of Sheikh Mohammed, Sapnaz filed an online complaint in the Shirva Police station.

Following Sapnaz’s complaint, a case under Section 4 of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 was filed against her husband, Sheikh Mohammed Saleem.

On August 7, when Sheikh Mohammed Saleem arrived at his native place, the Shirva Police arrested him and produced him before the court. The court has sent him to Judicial custody.
