The four-year term of K. Byrappa as the V-C of the university ended recently. Kumar will be in-charge till the Governor appoints a new Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of a search committee. The committee would have a nominee each by the university, University Grants Commission (UGC), the government and the Governor. It is learnt from the university that the committee is yet to be constituted. Discussions on the VC appointment will take place in Bengaluru starting 9 November.

In the meantime, before the permanent Vice Chancellor takes charge, members of Mangala Alumni Association (MAA) held a press meet at Mangalore Press Club, where the President of the association, Dinesh Kumar Alva said, “Our Mangalore University has earned name and fame in different aspects of education. Along with this there are many more things to do to emerge as an “Institution of excellence”. In view of this, the university needs a strong academician with proper vision to groom our University as equivalent to any premier institution of our country”.

“This aspect has influenced us to request the Governor and Chief Minister of Karnataka to make ways to appoint an eligible Mangalore University alumnus eligible candidate, who is well connected with Mangalore university affairs and pulse of the coastal region, as Vice Chancellor. This kind of appointment would strengthen the binding between the university and regional society at large. Transparency in administration and inclusiveness of local talent in all decision making would definitely take the university to the newer heights. MAA, being an association emotionally attached to the University, strongly feels that a leader with above mentioned qualities as Vice Chancellor is need of the hour to revamp and rejuvenate the lost glory of the University” added Dinesh Alva.

MAA office bearers Ganesh Sanjeev, Chandrahasa K, Madhusoodhan and Venu Sharma where present during the press meet.
