Mangaloreans Go The Bavarian Way in Celebrating ‘Oktoberfest 2018’ at Hotel Taj Gateway

Mangaluru: It was All About Beer, Food and Bavarian! Cheers with Beers, where food buffs and those who wanted to try something unique showed at Hotel Taj gateway-Mangaluru to celebrate ‘OKTOBERFEST 2018’ Like Germans Do, on Saturday, 20 October, which will continue on Sunday 21 Oct also, from 12.30 pm to 4 pm. It will be Three full hours to celebrate with sumptuous Food, Unlimited Bottled/Draught Beer, and non-stop Live Music by a Three Piece Band named ” Band E 3″, and tons of fun and frolic.

Even though the Oktoberfest is a significant part of Bavarian culture since 1810, and if at all the First Oktoberfest party kicked off in the year 1810 in Munich-Germany, but it took nearly 208 years to have the similar kind of Party here in the picturesque and Coastal town-Mangaluru-thanks to the efforts put in by the crew of Hotel Taj Gateway-Mangaluru to make this event happen today Saturday, 20 Oct, thereby giving an opportunity for the hard core party people of Kudla to party more. With sumptuous Continental along with a touch of Desi Cuisine, live music performance by a three-piece band comprising of Melroy on Keyboard and Vocals; Rynel on Guitar and Vocals, Lavita on Vocals, rendered some English Pop (Old and New), Acoustic Singer Songwriter songs, Old Rock, Reggae, English Ballroom, Bollywood (Old/New) etc, and of course, copious amounts of beer- the First day was a blast, and tomorrow, being a lazy Sunday, when people don’t do much rather than go out and enjoy life, Oktoberfest at Hotel Taj gateway will be an ideal destination to spend the weekend in merry.

For the reasonable price of Rs 1499 (all inclusive) for adults (Child Rates: 06 to 12 Yrs 750 AI) at a Star Hotel for this Fest, a bevy of food buffs enjoyed Unlimited Non Alcoholic Drinks like Mocktails, Litchi, Tomato, Orange juices and Assorted Soft Drinks; and for those who preferred Beer, they gulped on Unlimited brands of Kingfisher Premium, Kingfisher Strong, Kingfisher Ultra, Storm, Amstel, and Kingfisher Draught Beer. A starters Counter was set up at the Poolside, while a wide array of Buffet was arranged inside Port Café, the Usual Buffet destination! The Fest fun started at 1 pm, with the live band in attendance till 4 PM. With Shamiana Tent at Poolside lawns – both lawns had tents and decorations of white throw/ ribbons, which made the event look more in a festive mood and glitter.

Variety of delicacies with a touch of German flavours was a treat to the senses. Ranging from salads to sausages to desserts, the cuisine was something new to the food buffs of Mangaluru, and everyone enjoyed every bit of it. Executive Chef Sinu, along with assistant chefs Praveen, Ram Kishore and Sunil at Hotel Taj gateway had meticulously prepared the right menu for this Fest, along with keen supervision by Food and Beverage Manager Noor Mohammed, so that the food lovers will have the best food at this event.

October 20th Saturday Oktoberfest menu, comprised of Soup of the day will be -Knolkhol barley and garlic broth with chive sausage rings; Salads- Crudites with assorted dip; German potato salad with pickled capers; Balsamic Marinated spring tomatoes; Carpaccio Radish with flat parsley; Caesar salad; Shredded lamb and apple salad; Cold meat platter (Onions / Gherkins / Vegetables / Jalapenos / Olives / Garlic Comfit; Sauerkraut; Rotkohl; German sweet mustard; Grainy mustard; Rommery mustard; In the Bread display- Pumpernickel; Ciabatta; German hard rolls, Foccacia; Rye bread; Onion and thyme loaf

On Table display- Baguette with garlic butter, Vienne hard rolls; Main Course includes- Prawn biriyani with raita; Wine roasted lamb ribs with preserved fig; Steamed chicken and cabbage dolmas; Burger counter (live); Lamb and chicken; and at the Sausage counter (live)-Chicken krakauer, Chicken neurenberg, Chicken frankfurter and Chicken cheese cocktail sausage. Also in the menu- Butter tossed vegetables, Sweet potato mash with sautéed leeks, Layered aubergine and mushroom bake, Spaghetti with chunky tomato sauce and basil, Courgette Pilaf, Kadaipaneer, Dal makhani. End your meal with Desserts like- Pineapple upside down, German orange cheese cake, Blueberry Mousse, Bavarian gateaux, Baked rasmalai, with Ice cream of the day

The Sunday 21 Oct menu comprises of Soup of the day-Berlin potato soup with bacon crisps; Salads- Crudites with assorted dip, German potato salad with gherkins, Baby tomato and cheese skewers, Cucumber salad with dill, Waldorf salad, Chicken cheese and pineapple salad, Cold meat platter,(Onions / Gherkins / Vegetables / Jalapenos / Olives / Garlic Confit) , Sauerkraut, Rot kohl, German sweet mustard, Grainy mustard, Pommery mustard; in the Bread display- Pumpernickel, Ciabatta, German hard rolls, Foccacia, Rye bread, and Onion and thyme loaf. Table display will have Baguette with garlic butter, Viienne hard rolls

Main course will include Hyderabadi mutton briyani with raita, Wine stewed chicken with turnip and baby potatoes, Beer batter fried fish with caper mayo(live) Burger counter (live) Lamb and chicken; Sausage counter (live)- Chicken krakauer, Chicken neurenberg, Chicken frankfurter, Chicken cheese cocktail sausage, Bouquetiere of vegetables, Cheesy potato wedges, Mushroom and spinach lasagna, Fussily with saffron sauce and basil, Herbed Pilaf, Paneer makhani, Dal tadka; And for Desserts- Apple strudel with sabayon, German cheesecake, Black Forest Mousse, Bavarian gateaux, Chocolate jamun, along with Ice cream of the day.

The live band “Band E 3″which was suppose to play open air by the poolside had to shifted inside due to early morning rains playing some tricks- the band did entertain the customers with their best live performance with English, and also Bollywood songs. On the keyboard/Vocals was Melroy, who is a music producer\sound Engineer, and also a Free lance music producer. He has provided music for the upcoming Kannada movie “Ananth Vs Nusrath”, and he had also performed at IPL 2017 cricket tourney opening ceremony in Hyderabad. Rynel on the guitar/Vocals is also a music producer cum sound engineer, and was the finalist in the Soad 4 contest of Kaalangaan. He is also a recording engineer at Sandesha-Mangaluru. And crooner Lavita D’souza is an IInd year degree student at St Aloysius College-Mangaluru, also a National level RJ Hunt 2018 second place winner, plus has won the first place in journalism video bulletin national level contest-she ahs also sung a song for the Tulu/Konkani film Áshe Zaler Kashe”.

As guest appearance who wanted to play and sing live at the Fest was the party family, Mr and Mrs Nishchal Khurana from Bengaluru, where young boy Naitik Khurana stole the show with a special Bollywood song, which received loud applaud from the revelers. Why not us, with that attitude, even the banquet crew picked up the guitar, sat at the keyboard, held the microphone and gave their rendition of a popular Hindi number, which also received applauds. . Revelers doused their spirits in the best of Bavarian gastronomic journey as Hotel Taj Gateway which had brought this Fest right in their hometown, where did feast on unique delicacies and sipped varieties of “cold ones?” Instead of planning their trip to Munich-Germany, they all celebrated ‘Oktoberfest’ right here in Mangaluru, for a price within their budget, paid in Rupees and not in Euros?

One guest of the hotel enjoying the Fest speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “The same kind of Fest with all the delicacies and drinks will cost you over Rupees ten thousand at a star hotel in Mumbai. I am surprised the price is so cheap for all the goodies and beverages they are offering. I enjoyed the lavish spread of buffet and few cold ones, and I will definitely come back on Sunday too”. A German duo spending their holiday in Mangaluru also liking the Oktoberfest at the Taj Gateway, who were enjoying more of Indian cuisine rather than continental delicacies, and when asked why they preferred Desi cuisine over Western, the answer was , “We eat German food 365 days a year, but we want to our Bavarian tradition with Indian tradition and food”
