Mangaluru: Baja SAE India Racing – Canara Engineering College Students All Set With ‘ASTRA‘

Mangaluru: Canara Engineering College students’ team of Benjanpadavu are all set with a new Race Car (All Terrine Vehicle) for the nation’s prestigious “Baja SAE India Racing Competition 2015” to be held in Pitampur, Madhya Pradesh from 19th to 22nd February, 2015.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) of India has been organizing this national event since 2007. This is a 2-stage off-road racing competition and CEC students are participating for the 2nd time in this event.

The College Team ‘CEC Motor sports’ of 22 students lead by Sudhesh Shetty, a final year Mechanical Engineering student, is well qualified with a display of good show to the final round at present.

ASTRA is a team effort costing 4 lakh and is well supported by the College Management and Valuable Sponsors. It resembles the Baja Racing Car design of International Standard. 25 inch tyres for good pick up, 40 kg chassis, Tig weld joints, 55 kmph, weight 250 kg, 5 gears including reverse are the features of ASTRA which moves smoothly and quickly to any ups and downs even in steps. Riding as well as watching ASTRA perform is a joy and beauty to motor sport lovers.

It is the team effort which has shaped ASTRA. Now, all set it is designed as per norms of the event. Among the finalist teams, around 120, ASTRA is one among the only 9 teams participating from Karnataka.

Recently, ASTRA had a trial run in the CEC Campus and its impressive performance has boosted confidence of not only the team, but of the CECians and well wishers of ASTRA.

Now, ASTRA has begun its journey towards Pitampur Madhya Pradesh where the event will be held, carrying lot of hopes and best wishes of all from Canara lead by principal Dr Ganesh Bhat.
