Mangaluru: Shri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji of Hosanagara Math in Shivamogga district, who is facing charges of sexual assault on a female vocalist of the Ramakatha troupe, is scheduled to take part in the Brahmakalashotsava ceremony at Sahasralingeshwara temple in Uppinangady on Monday, Feb 23 evening.

He is expected to deliver a discourse, which would be followed by a programme called Shiva Katha and dance recitals. RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat will preside over the programme, where ISKCON Bengaluru vice president Chanchalapati Das will be present as chief guest.

In the meantime, a forum called ‘Samaana Manaska Vedike’ which has been fighting for justice for the victim of the alleged sexual assault, has submitted a memorandum to the department of religious endowments and the chief minister’s office. Therein the forum members said that a person facing such grave charges should not be allowed to be part of a religious event.

The Swamiji, ever since the sexual assault charges cropped up, has been delivering private religious discourses in his Math’s branches and devotees’ houses but has reportedly not appeared in public functions.

Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty, who is the honorary president of the reception committee of the reception committee at the temple, has been urged by a large number of devotees not to allow the Swamiji to take part so that the sanctity of the event would be preserved.

To prevent any unpleasant and undesirable developments in Uppinangady on Monday, Feb 23, the department of religious endowments, through the local administrations, is said to have taken measures to desist the Swamiji from attending the event.

Forum’s sources in Uppinangady and Puttur said that the organizers are trying to remove the hindrance by approaching the high court on Monday. It is yet to be seen if the court will be able to deliver a favourable judgement in time before the ceremony on Monday evening.
