The two accused, working at MCF on daily wages were aware that Kalpana was the only woman living in the entire building and also that her husband worked on night shift while she was alone at home.

According to their confessions during interrogation, they both planned to take sexual advantage of her on the night of Jan 12. They knocked on the door in the night. When she asked who it was, one of them it was her husband. She was surprised as to why he would return home so soon while on night shift.

As she tried to open the door reluctantly, the two men barged into the house and tried to sexually assault her. She is said to have resisted the attempt. Apparently, she had identified them. Hence they thought that they would be in trouble if left alive.
