Mangaluru: An online international video case presentation contest was organised by the AETCM (Academy of Emergency, Trauma and Critical Care Medicine ), Amritha Institute, Kochi in October – November 2020. Among the hundreds of entries from all over the world – of interesting cases in Emergency medicine by students, interns and postgraduates – two students from FMMC bagged the first and second places with a lot of appreciation from international emergency medicine faculty.

The First place bagged by Ann Georgy – final year medical student presented a case of spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Was praised by her judge Dr.Hisham Ahamed MD DM, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Amrita Institute of Medical Science for he was impressed with her clinical presentation skills, efficient use of the presentation medium and clear understanding of the clinical narrative. As a member of the panel which evaluated her performance, they found that she demonstrated a good grasp of the clinical problem being discussed and was well prepared with the contemporary literature as it applied to the clinical entity being considered. They were not surprised to find out that she had secured the first prize in that competition.

The Second place bagged by Dr Sushmitha Ravikumar- an intern with an avid interest in emergency medicine and Obstetrics – presented a rare case of Torsion uterus with Antepartum Haemorrhage, which was meticulously managed and turned out life-saving – by the FMMC department of obstetrics earlier this year. She was mentored by Dr Joylene DAlmeida, Associate professor, Dept of ObGyn, Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

Her presentation, dedication and knowledge on the subject helped her bag the second place at the Grand finale and accolades from various stalwarts in the field. Dr Radhamani K, Head OBG, Amrita Hospitals, Kochi is quoted “Haemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Your team could save the life of the patient even though peripartum hysterectomy is done. I appreciate your courage as an intern to present this complicated case. Your presentation, including the operative findings and the background of LR was excellent. You answered almost all the questions.”

Rev. Fr Richard A. Coelho, Director of the Father Muller Charitable Institutions, congratulated the students and their mentors, commending their efforts and dedication towards the health of their patients. The administrator of the Medical College Rev. Fr Ajith B. Menezes was elated and proud of the winnings. Wishes galore poured in from Dr JP Alva Dean, Dr Ramesh Bhat Vice Dean and faculty of the Father Muller Medical College.

It’s a proud moment for the college to be recognized at an international platform and by the stalwarts in India. FMCI has always emphasized the importance to education and health care; thus, always adding such feathers to its cap through its various celebrated colleges and hospitals. A proud moment for our nation and our city.
