Namma Metro network expanded from 6.7 km to 96.1 km in 15 years, says Karnataka CM Shivakumar
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, on Tuesday said Namma Metro had become an inseparable part of Bengaluru’s daily life, connecting lakhs of commuters to their workplaces and helping them pursue their aspirations, as the city’s Metro network completed 15 years.
In a statement marking the milestone, CM Shivakumar expressed pride over the growth of Namma Metro, noting that the network had expanded from 6.7 kilometres in 2011 to 96.1 kilometres today.
“What began as a new way to travel has become an inseparable part of Bengaluru’s daily life,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of the Metro service in the lives of Bengalureans, the Chief Minister said lakhs of people boarded Namma Metro every day to get to work, pursue their dreams and carry on with their daily activities. Their journeys, he said, reflected the story of Bengaluru.
CM Shivakumar said the government’s responsibility was to build on the progress achieved so far by making public transport more accessible, easing daily commutes and improving connectivity across the city.
He also stressed the need to ensure that Bengaluru remained better connected for future generations.
Marking the 15th anniversary, the Chief Minister extended his greetings to the millions of commuters whose daily journeys kept the city moving, celebrating Namma Metro’s contribution to Bengaluru’s evolving urban transport system.
Namma Metro is completing 15 years today (October 20, 2026), having first opened its initial stretch on October 20, 2011.
On October 20, 2011 first stretch from Byappanahalli to M.G. Road started operating. The network growth expanded from an initial 6.7 km stretch to 96.1 km across 83 stations.
The immediate focus remains on finishing the remaining stretches of Phase 2, which connects major employment hubs. The Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronic City) became fully operational in August 2025.
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro network is undergoing massive expansions across Phase 2, Phase 3, and newly proposed extensions. The current operational network of 96.1 km is projected to grow to 137.11 km by late 2026 and reach 175.55 km by late 2027.
