Nithin & Deekshith Shetty Arrested for Unruly Behaviour at Wenlock Hospital

Mangaluru: Recalling the incident which happened at Government Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, where a drunk accident victim was brought to Wenlock hospital at 3.30 am on Monday, 17 June, after he had fallen off his two-wheeler by his friends- the hospital staff on duty quickly attended on the victim, the best they could, but as they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive to shift the injured victim to a private hospital in the City, as per the request of the victim’s friends, one of the victim’s friend losing his temper and getting wild, started abusing the doctors and other health care staff with foul language (local Tulu language, as heard on Video), and even raised his voice blaming Govt Wenlock Hospital for negligence and delay in treating the victim properly, where he is heard saying it took an hour by the hospital caretakers to treat the victim.

In the meantime, the Wenlock Hospital Superintendent Dr Rajeshwari Devi filed a complaint with the police commissioner of the unruly behaviour and abusive language used by the victim’s friend, and Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil acting quick had registered a case in Mangaluru South Police Station under section 504 IPC ( Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and Section 3, 4 of Karnataka Prohibition of Violence against Medicare Service Personnel and damage to property in Medicare Service Institutions Act, 2009, Police sleuthing into the incident have now arrested two persons, namely Nithin and Deekshith Shetty, who created the ruckus, and both have been remained in judicial custody, until further notice.

As the video made by one of the accused went viral, shows the accused with other friends abusing doctors and staff of Wenlock Hospital, alleging that their friend who met with an accident was not taken care foe over an hour, during the wee hours of 17 June morning. The abusing words in local Tulu language is heard on the video, and the nearly 3-minute video clip was shared on social media. One of the accused is seen speaking in an abusive manner, while recording the plight of the accident victim, who is also seen lying on a stretcher.

This incident took place, just as the Health Care industry and the nation was still in shock by the bizarre incident that took place at the NRC College and Hospital, in Kolkata, West Bengal where a junior doctor was attacked with sharp weapons by the kith and kin of a patient who died, whom the family members allege that it was medical negligence. Speaking to Team Mangalorean after police made arrests of the two accused, Dr Sachidanand Rai- the President of Indian Medical Association- Mangaluru Chapter said, “We are happy that the police have arrested the culprits, and now at least they should stop acting unruly against doctors and other health care staff in future. National Law against violence on hospitals has to be brought in urgently. To ensure that the cases are registered, culprits should be arrested and conviction necessitated, and appropriate mandatory provisions as provided in the POCSO Act has to be instituted”.

“Hospitals should be declared as special zones and the provision of appropriate security should be the responsibility of the state. It has been observed that the increase in violence will adversely affect the public health at large. Not only the patients undergoing the treatment in the institution facing violence will be directly affected but also there are lot of indirect consequences. Institutions will be reluctant to take up complicated and risky patients which will affect public health at large. Threat of violence increases the stress levels of health care workers. Sound judgment regarding patient care will be compromised in such situations”-added Dr Rai.

As well said by Dr Sachidanand Rai, the action of the government and law enforcement officials is very much needed as early as possible, so that the doctors and other health care staff can do their duties without fear of hooligans. Mangaluru should not see any such incidents that took place at Wenlock Hospital in future, and for that matter, the law enforcement involvement is also needed to curb on such unruly activities by kith and kin, or friends of patients.
