Police Martyrs’ Day Observed in Udupi; Tributes Paid to Personnel Who Sacrificed Their Lives
Udupi: Remembering police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty is the responsibility of every citizen, said Principal District and Sessions Judge Kiran S. Gangannavar, commending the police for their role in maintaining peace and security in society.

He was speaking after paying tribute at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial during the Police Martyrs’ Day programme organised by the Udupi District Police Department at the District Armed Reserve Police headquarters on Wednesday, October 21.

He said police personnel serve society with dedication and integrity, often risking their lives to protect the public and maintain peace. They also assist people during difficult situations and contribute to the district’s development. He paid homage to the police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of society.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar explained the significance of Police Martyrs’ Day. He recalled that on October 21, 1959, 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel laid down their lives while bravely resisting an attack by Chinese troops near Ladakh, while nine others were injured and taken captive.
Police Martyrs’ Day is observed every year to honour their sacrifice and pay tribute to police personnel across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The names of police martyrs from across India were read out during the programme.

The police band played the hymn “Abide with Me” as a mark of respect. A three-round gun salute was accorded to the martyrs, and the police flag was lowered to half-mast.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Naik, Udupi Deputy Superintendent of Police Belliyappa, Kundapur Deputy Superintendent of Police H. D. Kulkarni, and other police officials were present.
