Pramod Madhwaraj Inaugurates First Organic Market ‘Savayava Santhe’

Udupi: The district administration in association with the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the departments of Agriculture and Horticulture and the Regional Organic Farmers Groups Federation inaugurated “Savayava Santhe” (Organic Market) at the Farmers Service Centre (Raitha Seva Kendra) here on October 15.

The formal inaugural programme began with the state anthem. Devadas Hebbar welcomed the gathering. Pramod Madhwaraj district minister in charge inaugurated the “Savayava Santhe” (Organic Market) by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries.

In his message, Pramod Madhwaraj said that organic food production does not involve the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or preservatives that make it last longer. Going organic and consuming pesticide-free food will eventually lead to a better healthy life for us and our families. Organic food is not only safe but also environment-friendly. The level of pesticides and preservatives in vegetables and fruits have been found to be higher than the permissible limits. This is one of the causes of cancer. Consumption of organic food would reduce the risk of cancer and another disease, he added.

DC Priyanka Mary Francis speaking on the occasion said that the Organic Market would ensure that organic vegetables and fruits grown by farmers would directly reach the consumers. The consumption of organic fruits, vegetables and minor millets help to lead a healthy life. From vegetables and fruits to a variety of flavoured honey and products for home gardening assistance, the organic market is a one-stop-solution for health-conscious people who seek to eliminate the presence of pesticides from the food chain, she added.

Sheela K Shetty vice president Udupi ZP, Wilson Rodrigues ZP member, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje president Udupi CMC, Ashok Kumar Kodgi and others were present.

The Organic Market will function every Sundays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Farmers Service Centre (Flower Auction Centre) at Doddanagudde near Perampalli.
