Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan held at Falnir and Highland

Mangaluru: 13th Shramadan of 5th phase of Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan was carried out in the Falnir Highlands area from 7.30 am to 10.30 am on 3rd March. The Shramadan was jointly flagged off at 7.30 am in front of Indira Hospital by Dr Dhanesh Kumar, Principal, Nitte College of Physiotherapy & Industrialist Mohan Kottari. Swami Ekagamyanandaji, Convener of the Abhiyan, Prof. Bharathi Bhat, Masahiro, Umakanth Suvarna, Imtiyaj Sheikh, P N Bhat, Ravi K R and others were present. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Dhanesh Kumar said, “Today’s youths have the potential to make our nation great. We have to sacrifice our comforts for the betterment of the nation. This Abhiyan has given us all a unique and rare opportunity to contribute towards the nation. Most importantly youths are identifying themselves with this Abhiyan. They are also getting suitable guidance from the seniors in this regard”. Sri Mohan Kottari said, “Swacch Bharath will materialise if we give importance to internal purity along with the external cleanliness. Joining hands in this Abhiyan is more effective than mere lip service. I congratulate all who have come forward to join their hands in this Abhiyan.”

Shramadan was carried out in Mother Teresa road and surrounding areas in Highlands at Falnir. After flagging off the programme, Swami Ekagamyanandaji & volunteers swept the bus shelter near Indira Hospital clean. Students of Nitte Physiotherapy College cleaned both the roadsides & adjoining drains of Mother Teresa road till Avery junction. Members of Nivedita Balaga removed the garbage from Coelho lane. Devotees of Ramakrishna Mission cleaned the road and footpaths leading towards Kankanady. Stone slabs forming the footpaths were properly placed to help the pedestrians. A black spot which was prone to littering by the public was cleaned by senior volunteers along with Rajgopal Shetty & Ramachandra Shetty. A large heap of sand was removed and the ground was levelled using JCB. Care is also taken to prevent the public from littering in that place. Black spot is transformed into a green spot by placing flower pots. A petty shop lying behind the bus shelter was full of garbage and it was cleaned and the unused shop was removed from the place.

Bus Shelter at Highlands was neglected and passenger amenities like seats were lacking. Today it was renovated under Mukesh Alva. Garbage was removed from the surroundings of the bus stand. Lokesh Kottara & Uday K P fixed new seats for passengers to sit. The pillars of the bus stand were painted. The walls of the bus stand were also painted giving it a much-needed facelift. Yogish Kayarthdaka, Himmat Singh guided the volunteers. All the volunteers were served tiffin after Shramadan. KMF sponsored buttermilk to all the volunteers.

Swacch Soch Seminars were held in about 10 colleges of Udupi Dist. These seminars were organised in Nitte Dr Shankar Adyanthaya First Grade College, Karkala Bhuvanendra College, Shankaranarayana First Grade College, Kapu First Grade College, Sri Sharada College, Basrur, Bhandarkars Arts & Science College, Kundapur, Dr G Shankar Govt. Women’s College Ajjarkad, Hiriyadka Govt. Degree College, Mandarthi Govt. First Grade College, St. Mary’s College, Shirva. Till date, 34 seminars have been conducted.

Interaction with college students, Discussions, lectures, Oath giving and demonstration of pot compost & wet waste management are the special features of the Swacch Soch Seminars. Prof. Rajamohan Rao, Saritha Shetty, Dr Nivedita M Kamath, Satish Sadananda, Prathibha Kudthadka & Gopinath Rao were resource persons. Ranjan Bellarpady coordinated these seminars assisted by Shreevathsa N & Kanchana. MRPL & Nitte institutions are sponsoring these drives.
