Ramakrishna Mission to Promote ‘Bio Bins’ on Conclusion of Swacch Mluru Abhiyan

Ramakrishna Mission to Promote “Bio Bins” {Kitchen Waste Composter} on Conclusion of Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan. The ‘Kitchen Waste Composter’ which costs Rs 2000 in market, is offered by Ramakrishna Mission to people at a reasonable price of Rs 500.

Mangaluru: In response to the call given to the nation by the honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also special request from Govt. of India, Ramakrishna Mission-Mangaluru had initiated “Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan” four years ago. Tremendous positive response from the people for this initiative since its inception, vouches the fact that this movement is by the people and for the people and hence has successfully completed the 4th phase. And since the concluding Ceremony Programme of the 4th phase will be held in Ramakrishna Math Auditorium on 28th July at 4 pm, a press meet was organized on Thursday, 26 July 2018 at the Ramakrishna Mission hall.

Briefing the media persons during the press meet, Swami Jitakamananda-Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission and Swami Ekagamyanandaji-Convener gave elaborate details of the activities and cleanliness drive during the Swachh Abhiyan. In a press release, they stated, “Ramakrishna Mission’s initiative in creating awareness among the citizens about cleanliness since last four years is well known. 4th Phase of the Abhiyan initiated on 3rd November 2017 is concluding on 28th July 2018. In the 4th phase we successfully carried out 4 different kinds of activities under Swacchata Abhiyan – Every Sunday Shramadan, Every Day awareness campaign, “Swacch Grama” and “Swacch Manas” for Training programme students of schools which have played significant role in creating awareness and social concern among the students and citizens. MRPL has sponsored the 4th phase of Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan.”

Every Sunday Shramadan:

Starting from Last November till date, about 40 weekly Shramadans have been conducted in different localities of the city. About 100-200 volunteers comprising of zïoctors, advocates, entrepreneurs, industrialists, students, lecturers, social activists, foreigners, senior citizens, physically challenged people, youths and eminent citizens have volunteered in this shradaman every Sunday from 7 am to 10 am. Specialty of this shramadan was that its volunteers were from different caste, religion, creed and races irrespective of any political affiliation. Shramadan included apart from cleaning the roads, dividers and drains, renovation and restoration of parks, restoration of direction boards, and name plates, restoration and erection of new bus shelters, Removal of unauthorized banners, buntings and posters, beautification of compound walls and painting of art works, etc. About 30 black spots prone to littering by people were identified and transformed into small gardens with flower pots which have been maintained till date. Our volunteers have also been successful in stopping the people from display of unauthorized posters etc. in many public places.

Daily Awareness Campaign:

Awareness forms the crux of our campaign. Hence volunteers pledged to visit nearly 100 houses everyday with the message of awareness. About 170 programmes have been conducted and 20,000 houses have been visited under this initiative by nearly 40 groups of volunteers. Distribution of awareness handbills, Segregation and management of dry and wet wastes, Pot composting through Bio Bins, distribution of Bio Bins, distribution of bags to store dry waste for regular disposal were carried out by the volunteers. Abhishek V S- an active volunteer of this Swachh campaign briefed about the Bio Bin, and he mentioned that the Bio Bin which is sold at Rs 2000 in the market, will be offered at discounted price of Rs 500 through Ramakrishna Mission.

Swacch Manas:

Today’s students are tomorrows citizens. Keeping this in view Swacch Manas programmes were conducted in nearly 108 schools in Mangalore, Bantwala & Puttur Taluks. About 10757 students from these schools were selected as Swacchata Senanis. About 500 programmes have been conducted in these schools under the concept, Swacchata Chintana, Swacchata Spardha, Swacchata Diwas, Swacchata Manthana and Swacchata Darshana. About 60 Resource persons were given training to conduct programmes in each school for one hour every month. About 5 students from each schools were selected as Swacch Ambassadors and were given training in a workshop in the Ashrama. Under the auspices of the Ashrama, internationally acclaimed magician Kudroli Ganesh and group are conducting nearly 100 Magic Shows for cleanliness in these schools thus creating awareness among the students & staff. Students are also made to take Swacchata Oaths during these programmes. We have received very good feedback from the school staff & management about these programmes and their effect on the students.

Swacch Gram:

To expand the scope and domain of the Swacchata Abhiyan Ramakrishna Mission took up the drives in 100 villages in Mangalore & Bantwala Taluks. With the support & cooperation of D K Zilla Panachayats one drive was carried out in each village in a month involving the local Village Panchayat Presidents, Vice Presidents & Panchayat Development Officers. About 6000 volunteers have actively participated in these drives. Among these 100 villages about 30 villages have been identified and the Ashrama is installing a clean drinking water unit in those villages. Efforts are also being made to repair & restore dilapidated toilets, construction of toilets, erection of nameplates & direction boards etc.

All these activities under 4th phase have been effective in creating awareness among the citizens and we have received positive feedback from the people. The concluding ceremony of the 4th phase will be held in our Ashram auditorium on Saturday, 28th July at 4.00 pm.

Concluding Ceremony Programme:

Concluding Ceremony of the 4th Phase of Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan will be held at Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru on 28th July at 4 pm. Swami Divyanandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Saradapith, Belur Math & Trustee, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math will preside over the function. Dr. N Vinay Hegde, Chairman, Nitte Education Trust, Sri A K Sahoo, Director- Finance, MRPL, D Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru South, Captain Ganesh Karnik, Former MLC will be Guests of honor in the programme.

Chandrakant Kulkarni and Miss Bhavya Rani, who have dedicated their services and are real ambassadors of Swacchata Abhiyan will be honoured in the programme. Students who have performed well in Swacchata Darshana exams will also be awarded. Stage Programme will be followed by Special Magic Show on cleanliness by International acclaimed magician, Sri Kudroli Ganesh 7 Group at 7 pm.

Coordinators of Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan Dilraj Alva and Umanath Kotekar; Swami Chidambarananda-Chief Convener, Swacch Bharath Abhiyan; and Ranjan Bellarpady-Coordinator of ‘Swacch Manas’ were also present during the press meet.
