Rape and Murder Accused Escapes from Police Custody

Udupi: A person accused of rape and murder escaped from police custody while he was being taken to jail on March 31.

The accused Hanumanthappa (30) was arrested on Friday, March 29 in connection with the rape and murder of a girl at Moodusagri, Manipal.

On March 31, the Manipal Police produced Hanumanthappa before the court where he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

After completing the formalities in the court, two police constables escorted Hanumanthappa to Hiriyadka. However, Hanumanthappa managed to escape from the police.

If he is seen by anyone, police may be immediately informed on Udupi district control room number.

The Victim, a native of Badami had gone missing on March 9. The family members of the victim searched everywhere and later filed a missing person’s complaint in the Women’s Police Station on Sunday, March 10.

On March 10, evening a passerby had noticed the body lying on the ground in Moodusagri and alerted the police.

As per the police sources, Hanumanthappa had befriended the victim and took her to the forest area near Moodusagri and raped her. When she threatened him of complaining, he had strangled her.
