‘Sakhi’, one-stop-centre for women to be set up in Udupi – Shobha Karandlaje

Manipal: The central government funded Sakhi, a one-stop-centre providing legal and medical assistance, counseling, and rehabilitation for women who have suffered atrocities will be set up in Udupi district, said Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director for Women and Child Welfare Department. She was speaking at a vigilance meeting chaired by Shobha Karandlaje, MP Udupi-Chikkamagaluru LS constituency at Dr V S Acharya Auditorium, Rajathadri here on May 17.

The central government has provided funds of Rs 45.87 lakh for the construction of this centre. At present, the center will be operating from the State Home located in Nittur where the one-stop-centre will be set up. Gracy further added that Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umashree will be laying the foundation stone for the one-stop-centre. The state level center will be fully equipped.

A pre-feasibility report should be prepared on supplying water from Varahi Irrigation project to cater to the drinking water needs of rural and urban area, said deputy commissioner Dr R Vishal. Shobha Karandlaje replied that this issue has been discussed in various platforms and the pre-feasibility report will give a clear picture.

The pending bills of rupees 8 crores of various completed projects that provide drinking water has caused trouble for the contractors and this has led them to stay away from participating in the tender process, said Bola Sadhashiv Shetty. ZP CEO Priyanka Mary Francis replied that the state government has released Rs 2 crore for settling the pending bills; talks are also on with the department for releasing payment for the pending bills.

25,957 accounts have been opened under the Mudhra scheme, and the beneficiaries have been provided with Rs 266 crore loan. Rs 26.35 crore has been released by the central government for electrification and system improvement works. The tender process is on, said a MESCOM official.

Deputy Director for Department of Social Welfare said that 2 students belonging to SC/ST have scored 90 and 80% marks respectively. Special coaching was organized for the students, he added.
