Sand Mafia Challenges Pavoor – Uliya Residents, Destroy Bridge, Vehicles

Mangaluru: The Pavoor – Uliya bridge, the only bridge constructed for the residents was allegedly destroyed by the sand mafia on early hours of February 2.

Speaking to mangalorean.com one of the residents of Pavoor – Uliya said, “We had constructed the bridge spending about Rs 18 lakhs and the work was still going on. In this area, the sand mafia is very active and illegal sand mining is rampant. We the residents have filed complaints against sand mining in this area to the concerned authorities”.

The resident further said, “On February 2, at around 1:30 am, the sand mafia destroyed the bridge. They also damaged 4 two-wheelers and an autorickshaw. We demand the concerned authorities take stringent action against those involved in this crime and are hell-bent in harassing and causing misery to the residents of Pavoor – Uliya.”

The resident also said, “Recently the Pavoor – Uliya residents had got together and rounded up 46 sand mining boats involved in illegal sand mining in the area and had submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and the police commissioner. In revenge, the sand mafia has destroyed the bridge and our vehicles. We need safety from the sand mafia and illegal sand mining in this area should be completely stopped. We request the concerned authorities to take this issue seriously and take action priority basis.”
