He hails from Matandoor in Puttur taluk. His first stint as an office-bearer was when was chosen to be general secretary of Uppinangady block BJP in 1989. Thereafter he was posted as Puttur constituency-level general secretary and then as general secretary of the district unit.

He has held different positions like gram panchayat member, taluk panchayat member, APMC member, president of Sahakar Bharati and as director of SKACMS, Janata Bazar and CAMPCO. He now succeeds Pratapsimha Nayak as president of the district unit.

He may have an uphill task initially since his area of work had so far been mostly around Puttur. Some sources in the city BJP unit expressed surprise at his choice when there were other district-level seniors were available.

But since most of the district presidents this time were handpicked by B S Yeddyurappa, who in turn was a personal choice of PM Modi and party national president Amit Shah, there is no scope for resentment nor even open comment.

Similar reactions were heard in Udupi regarding president-designate advocate Mattar Ratnakar Hegde. He had been a long-time Janata man, who crossed over to the BJP just over a decade ago.
