Shiradi Ghat to Open for all Passenger Vehicles from October 3

Mangaluru: “From October 3, the Shiradi Ghat will be opened for all kinds of passenger vehicles. We will deploy the police in four places in the landslide affected stretches to monitor the situation for about two weeks. Hoardings will also be erected in these areas to alert the road users”, said Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil in a press meet held at the DC office here on October 1.

Addressing the mediapersons Sasikanth Senthil said, “Landslide had occurred in 12 places in the Shiradi Ghat of which 8 places are safe. Police will be deployed at places found to be unsafe to monitor the traffic and study the situation. Subsequently, the decision for allowing goods transport vehicles will be taken. I have also discussed this issue with the SP of Hassan.”

Sasikanth Senthil further said, “We are taking up crop survey through the mobile app. In Dakshina Kannada, there are 422 grams for which we will appoint 1250 residents to carry out the crop survey and they will be paid Rs 10 per plot for the survey. The survey has already started from September 29, those doing the survey should collect the information about every plot and upload it through the mobile app. We request all the farmers to co-operate with the surveyors as well as the government officials to complete the survey within a month.”

Sasikanth Senthil also said, “The old Kulur bridge will be closed and a new bridge will be constructed. During the construction of the new bridge, traffic will be diverted in one way.”

When asked about the sand problem, DC said, “Sand has accumulated in the Thumbay dam and we have requested the government to permit de-silting. The Central government has said that no permission is needed for such work. If we di-silt the Thumbay dam we can also solve the drinking water problem as a huge quantity of sand has accumulated in the dam. 80% of the seized sand has been utilized for government work and 300 loads of the sand is available which will be given to the Mangaluru City corporation for government work. If any vehicle is seized for transporting illegal sand, the vehicle will not be released until the owner gives two times the bank guarantee, it is not possible to get the vehicle released even through court. This is my warning and request to truck owners not to indulge in illegal sand mining and transporting since it will be very difficult for them to release the vehicle, especially for the single truck owners”.

ADC Kumar was also present.
