Puttur: The state high court has ruled that six members of the Puttur city municipal council be allowed to take part in the proceedings of the city body for 8 weeks, until a final ruling would be given on a writ petition being heard by it.

The six councillors, including former president Nellikatte Jagadish Shetty had violated the party’s whip during the election to the post of TMC elections last year. They are Nellikatte Jagadish Shetty, Naveenchandra Naik, Deeksha Pai, Seema Gangadhar, Kamala Anand and Rekha Yashodhar.

On receipt of a complaint from the party functionaries in the court of deputy commissioner in Mangaluru, the DC had disqualified their membership. They went in appeal to the state high court. A single-judge bench upheld the ruling.

The appellants filed a petition to a division bench, which has now stayed the single-judge bench order for eight weeks, by when a final ruling would be given.

The division bench presided over by Justices N Kumar and Virupaksha has allowed the six councillors to continue as members until then.
