Speeding Lorry Knocks Down Scooty-Rider Akshay Kumpala (26) Dead

Mangaluru: It was a tragic death for a young rider who was riding his Honda Matrix Dio Scooty, along with his pillion rider. At around 9:30 am Sunday morning, 29 April 2018, Akshay Kumpala aged 26, hailing from Vittal in Bantwal Taluk, employed with a marketing firm, was riding his Honda Matrix licence plate no KA 19 EL 3008, along with his friend {pillion rider} Prishanth {25}.

Akshay was heading towards the City from Yekkur side- while they were both near Fr Muller Convention Centre, near Kankanady Pumpwell, in the congested construction zone, a speeding lorry bearing Licence plate no: KL 40 C 3772, also plying on the same direction, knocked the scooty from the rear. Due to the impact, Akshay was thrown off the scooty on to the road. Tragically, one of the lorry tyre ran over Akshay’s head, injuring him seriously.

Since Akshay was slightly breathing, a nearby Indian hospital ambulance rushed to the scene, along with Good Samaritan Johnson Dayal, an emergency staff quickly transported Akshay to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru. Traffic Circle inspector Nagesh Bangera who was directing traffic nearby also escorted the ambulance team. But unfortunately, Akshay had breathed his last before reaching the hospital. Since there was no damage done to the helmet, it is not sure whether the rider was wearing the helmet, or the helmet was carried by the pillion rider.

The pillion rider Prithish, who luckily escaped with minor injuries on his legs and arms, speaking to Team Mangalorean at the Mangaluru Traffic South Police Station, with heavy tears in his eyes said, “I can’t believe that I lost one of my childhood friends. We have been so close friends that we always do things and have fun together. Words can’t explain how much I will miss my dear friend Akshay”.

The body has been sent to Wenlock mortuary for post-mortem, and a case has been registered against the lorry driver at Mangaluru Traffic South police station.
