The END of Climax between Lawyers & Producers of Tulu Film ‘Girgit’-Certain Scenes to be Muted/Deleted

Mangaluru: I am not a person who likes to see movies, but I was determined to go see the Tulu movie “Girgit”, after much of that hoopla that has been going on between the lawyers and the producers of ‘Girgit’- and wow, I did enjoy the movie, even though I don’t understand much of Tulu- I was continuously laughing following others in movie theatre? Seems like this movie is a total family entertainer, full of laughs and fun, from start to end, and has been running full houses since its release date on 23 August-in Mangaluru, and also in Mysuru, Bengaluru, and Gulf countries- and very soon to be released in USA, Israel, Australia and other countries.

After nearly four weeks of the release of Girgit, there arises a problem for the producers/director of the movie, where the Mangalore Bar Association raised a complaint against a couple of scenes in the movie that offended the legal fraternity and judicial system. The lawyers went forward and got a stay order on the movie, but the theatres still continued to screen the movie till date- since they never received any orders from the court. A Court hearing date on this matter was scheduled for 17 September, however, prior to the court date, both the lawyers and producers had compromised, the case was withdrawn- and a press meet was held on 17 September at Press Club to brief the media of the settlement.

Reaching a compromise over a plaint filed by the Mangalore Bar Association and producers of the movie, where earlier the lawyers were not happy with loose characterization of those in the legal profession, judges and the judicial system, as portrayed in the movie. On Monday, both the parties, however, filed a joint memo before the principal civil judge and judicial magistrate first class, listing the terms of the settlement. During the press meet, Raghavendra H V-the general secretary of Bar Association said, “Both the parties have agreed to submit a compliance report before the court on 23 September, after which the association will withdraw its complaint. Producers have sought time to carry out necessary changes as per terms of the settlement and need to follow procedure before that”.

Also speaking during the press meet, M P Shenoy-the legal counsel for the Bar Association said, “It was definitely not the intention of the lawyers to infringe on the creativity of the fledgling Tulu film industry for which our association has the highest regards. We want and will definitely support the Tulu film industry, we all being in the Tulunadu. Our plaint was only against the objectionable portrayal of the legal system. We are happy that a settlement was reached and everything is good to go”.

Meanwhile, Roopesh Shetty-one of the producer of the movie said, “We apologize if we had hurt the lawyers’ fraternity. Certain procedures had to be followed before we could mute or delete the controversial scenes. Moving the CBFC to carry out the changes is the first step in this direction. While muting the offending dialogues will be first compiled, which will be done within the next three after submitting the necessary documents to the censor board, after which within the next 30-40 days the offending scenes of a duration of 2 mins will be deleted. We have already moved an application before the Bengaluru regional office of the Central Board of Film Certification to effect these changes. The board incidentally had given our movie a “U ” certificate. I am happy that the bar association compromised on this matter, and also giving us time to settle this issue without getting further into legal proceedings”.

It was also announced by the lawyers during the press met that their association had filed a complaint against two Facebook pages for allegedly defaming and insulting the legal fraternity, and the police have arrested the members of these FB pages, namely “Troll Marler” and “Troll Nanjele” of maligning the image of Mangalore Bar Association. Both the FB pages have been blocked by Mumbai Facebook branch after MBA had submitted a memorandum to assistant police commissioner Bhasker at Bunder police station. Producer of Girgit Roopesh was happy that the FB pages have been blocked, if not it would have created more problems and disharmony between the lawyers and producers, and also the community.

On a final note, all you fans of Tulu movies, if you are still curious to note what the offending scenes/dialogues in the movie that had created all this issue, then head on quick to watch Girgit within the next two days, after that the dialogues will be muted-and you’ll be seeing only action and no dialogues on the 2 mins scene. ‘Girgit’ Producer Manjunath Attavar was also present during the press meet.
