Timely Help by Humble Peoples’ Representative gives New Life to month-old Baby Arjun

Udupi: A storm along with heavy downpour on 16th June 2016 ruined the lives of people living in the huts of Bommarabettu village in Hiriyadka. One poor family in Bommarabettu just had the birth of a baby boy in their family a month before the incident. The month old baby boy had brought smiles to the faces of a family that was toiling hard and living in a small hut in Bommarabettu.

It was midnight and Coastal Karnataka was witnessing a heavy downpour along with a storm. The mother after breastfeeding had put her baby to sleep in a cradle made with a saree. The cradle was hung to the beams of the hut.

The storm intensified with the heavy downpour. As winds continued to blow and bring down trees, the roof of the hut flew away with the baby. This incident which happened 2 years back shook the district. Families belonging to Hanagunda in Bagalkote district were living in huts since 20 years in Bommarabettu. The couple, Mahantesh and Sharadha, had been in a state of bliss ever since the birth of the child in their family.

But their lives were shattered as their baby Arjun lay injured in their hands. Arjun had flown away along with the roof of the hut in the storm and had landed 100 meters away. Tears rolling down the eyes of Mahantesh and Sharadha, they rushed the child to a private hospital in Manipal. The hospital charges left them in distress. With the hope of saving their baby, they admitted him to the Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.

The storm at Bommarabettu had also destroyed the lives of daily wage labourers. Since the storm had hit, government officials who were on leave on Sunday were asked to report to duty in the morning. Vinay Kumar Sorake had instructed the officials to build houses for the displaced.

As Life takes new twists – a light of hope had just arrived. Sorake had just arrived at the Wenlock Hospital Mangaluru. A politician who is known for his simplicity and commitment towards his constituency told the parents that the fact the baby has survived was a miracle. He then consulted the doctors at the hospital and even paid the hospital bills.

Arjun will be celebrating his birthday on May 16, the child is 2 years old now. His parents say that they owe a lot to Sorake who is close to their hearts. They say that if they forget his noble deed they would be committing a sin. They also say that when they had arrived at Bommarabettu they lacked basic facilities, but today, they possess Ration Cards, Voter IDs and basic facilities for a living. Sorake has enriched their life, say Mahantesh and Sharadha.
