Two Arrested in House-Burglary Cases in Udupi; Property Worth Rs 23.56 Lakh Recovered
Udupi: Udupi Town Police have arrested two persons in connection with a series of house burglaries targeting locked homes and recovered gold and silver jewellery, foreign currency, cash, vehicles and other property worth approximately Rs 23.56 lakh.
The arrested persons are Arun S.V., 43, and Kaushik, 19. Acting on credible information, police arrested the duo at Santosh Nagar in Perampalli and seized the stolen property.
The recovered property includes foreign currency and notes worth around Rs 2 lakh; 1 kg 360 grams of silver jewellery valued at Rs 2,86,730; gold coins weighing 1.45 grams valued at Rs 22,500; and 88.400 grams of gold valued at Rs 13,26,000. Police also recovered Rs 33,000 in cash, an autorickshaw valued at Rs 4 lakh, two mobile phones worth Rs 13,000, a stolen Pulsar motorcycle allegedly used in the offences and valued at Rs 45,000, and a foreign wristwatch valued at Rs 30,000. The total value of the recovered property is estimated at Rs 23,56,230.
According to police, the accused allegedly targeted locked houses. They reportedly used a stolen Pulsar motorcycle to identify such houses before breaking open the doors and committing thefts. The investigation has linked them to five cases registered under Udupi Town and Malpe police station limits.
The cases include Udupi City Police Station Crime No. 107/2026, relating to a theft at the house of Shashirekha in Kodankur village; Crime No. 108/2026, concerning a theft at the house of Sanam in Bhagavathi Layout, Puttur village; Malpe Police Station Crime No. 82/2026, involving the theft of a Pulsar motorcycle belonging to Sandesh from a garage near Nejaru Mosque; Crime No. 85/2026, relating to a burglary at the house of Trupthi Avinash in Kelarkalabettu; and Crime No. 93/2026, concerning a theft at the house of Ravi Upadhya in Kelarkalabettu.
The case that led to the arrests was reported by Sanam, 39, who had returned to Udupi from Dubai. She had gone to a relative’s house on August 8 and, upon returning home at around 11:30 a.m. on August 11, found that the terrace door had been forcibly opened. The burglars allegedly broke open a cupboard and stole 10,000 UAE dirhams and Rs 14,000 in cash, with the total loss estimated at approximately Rs 2.14 lakh.
Based on her complaint, Udupi City Police registered Crime No. 108/2026 under Sections 331(3), 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police said the first accused, Arun Achari, had previously been convicted in Malpe/Manipal Police Station Crime No. 176/2016 under the POCSO Act and had served nine years in prison. He was released from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in July 2025.
The operation was conducted under the direction of Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, IPS, and the guidance of Additional Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Naik and Udupi Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent of Police Belliyappa.
A special team led by Udupi Town Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad investigated with the assistance of PSI Prakash and police personnel Prasanna C., Jeevan Kumar, Krishna Devadiga, Anand Ganiga, Anand S., and Obalesh, along with Manipal Police Station personnel Mallayya Hiremath and Hemanth Kumar.
The accused were produced before the court and taken into police custody for further investigation.
