Udupi: According to police reports from Udupi, a manager of a Innaje co-operative bank named Umesh Amin and its gold assayer named Umesh Acharya have been arrested by the police for duping the bank to the tune of Rs 64 lakh- both of them had created as many as 93 fake accounts in different names. Both these culprits have been lodged behind bars. The scam came to light when Udupi police were investigating into the suicide pact of Shankar Acharya, his wife and two daughters.

Recalling the incident that took place few days ago, where Shankar Acharya, his wife Nirmala and daughters Shruthi and Shreya, from Padubelle, had committed suicide on July 13. Following their suicide, having some doubts the officials of Innaje Cooperative Bank discovered that most of the 2.7 kg gold jewellery Shankar Acharya had pledged with the bank, to avail a loan of Rs 64 lakh, was artificial gold with gold plating.

Immediately the managing director of the bank registered a complaint with the Bantwal police who quickly sprung into action and arrested bank manager Umesh and gold assayer Umesh Acharya. After interrogation, the police found out that these two persons had joined hands with Shankar Acharya to swindle the bank with lump sum of money, through loans under different names.

According to Udupi SP K T Balakrishna it is learnt that both these men had created as many as 93 fake accounts in different names to give loan to Shankar Acharya as the bank’s policy restricted a maximum loan of Rs 5 lakh per account. Of the 2.7 kg gold jewellery, Shankar had pledged to avail the loan, only 150 gms was of pure gold and the rest was made of silver with 2-3 layers of gold coating, as per SP.

Sources reveal that Shankar Acharya who might have got a hint on July 12 that he would be in trouble for getting a loan on fake gold, might have taken the extreme step of committing suicide along with his family members on July 13 morning.
