Udupi: The district administration in association with Zilla Panchayat and Horticulture department organized “Flower show -2016”, at the flower Auction Centre Shivalli Doddangudde here, on January 29.
Dr R Vishal Deputy Commissioner of the district inaugurated the Flower Show, while K Annamalai Superintendent of police inaugurated the terrace Garden. Priyanka Mary Francis CEO of Zilla Panchayat inaugurated the flower models.
Addressing the gathering Priyanka said that those living in urban areas should promote terrace and kitchen gardens. People should make farming even on small holdings which are profitable through scientific cultivation, she added.
Deputy Commissioner DR R Vishal in his message said that Farmers suicides are at peak in the state. Various agricultural related departments should instill the confidence in farmers to cultivate crops. Cultivating various types of crops in their fields, will avoid suicides in state. Officers should respond to farmer’s problems and provide all the facilities. The district level officers should impart proper guidance to the farmers in distress, he added.
Marigolds, periwinkles, dutch roses, Xenia, dahlia, chrysanthemums, orchids zelia, cosmos, celosia, pentas, canna, asters, impatiens, balsam, petunia and gazanias and many other rare varieties of flowers attracted large number of people. Vegetable carving artist from Kundapur had carved flowers from watermelon, basket and parrot from pumpkin. fish models, Boat and Heart made with different colours of Dutch roses, Carnations and a variety of colourful flowers enthralled visitors.
To promote terrace and kitchen gardening, the department of horticulture had grown bottle gourd, ridge gourd, ash gourd, pumpkin, water melon, bitter gourd, cucumber, radish, beetroot, spinach and other leafy vegetables for the show.
Different departments under the Zilla Panchayat had also put up their stalls, introducing the department activities. The fisheries department had displayed various schemes from the government. Officials from the department of sericulture were seen explaining the visitors on the process of silk creation from silk worms through cocoons.
Anthony Maria Emmanuel, joint director of agricultural department, D M Hanumanthappa assistant research director zonal agricultural and horticulture research center Brahmavar, Dr B Dhanajay, K E Vijaykumar, S Sadashiva Rao and others were present.
