Udupi Dist Administration to hold Alupa Utsav from Jan 25-27 at Barkur

Udupi: The district administration has decided to hold Alupa Utsav at Barkur from January 25 to 27 said Priyanka Mary Francis Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district.

Speaking at a press meet held at the DC office on January 16 she said, “The district administration has prepared an action plan of 25 lakhs for Alupa Utsav and we have requested the state government to provided additional funds of Rs 2 crore. As a part of the programme, we have organized a Heritage walk on January 25 evening. Cultural heritage is the reference point to our past. It would help us to understand our history and ancestry that binds us together. At the same time, it would be an integral part of our present and future”.

“Barkuru is a city of Metropolitan antiquity. Barahakanyapura is the original name of Barkur, the capital city of Alupa. Barkur has a long history of more than 2000 years it was a busy port from the beginning of the Christian era. It was the capital city of the local dynasty called Alupas. It was a political center under the Hoysalas. Barkur was the provincial capital under the Vijayanagar rulers. Even Keladi Nayakas also had Barkur as their center of activities. The aim of the Heritage walk is to preserve the rich heritage of Barkur so that it can be passed on the next generation. Heritage walks are the best way to learn and recognise our culture, traditions, philosophy, myths etc and Barkur trial would help us to know the Tuluva Culture.

The walk commences from Simhasana Gudde and passes through Panchalingeshwara Temple, Batte Vinayaka Temple, Gopalakrishna Temple, Somanatha Temple, Manigara Keri, Aadi Parameshwara Temple Chowlikerei, Barkuru Vijayanagara Port, Someshwar Temple Moodukere, Veerabhadra Temple, Hiriya Basadi, Kalikamba Temple and culminate at the Kallu Chappara. The walk will cover a distance of 4 km touching 17 heritage points.

Various events like Fruits and flower show, painting exhibition, Photography exhibitions, Yakshagana, Folk dance, Sound and light show, cultural programmes have been drawn up. A variety of cultural programmes will be held on all the days. In addition, food stalls will be set up and exhibition on handicrafts and others will also be held. A special postal cover will be launched on the occasion. The chief minister of Karnataka is expected to attend the inaugural programme, she said.
