Udupi: Manipal gang rape case, court to record statement from accused on April 16

Udupi: The district sessions court has completed the examination of all the evidence and witnesses relating to the Manipal gang rape case on March 25. With the recording of the statement from the then Police Inspector of Manipal PS Sadhananda Tippanavar, the District Sessions Court has completed the enquiry and cross-examination of the witnesses.

108 witnesses were recorded in the charge sheet submitted by the police to the court. The public prosecutor and the defence council have verified 62 witnesses in the trails.

The court has remanded the judicial custody of the accused till April 16. The statements under Section 313 of Cr. P.C will be recorded from the accused when they are produced in court on April 16.

Public prosecutor T.S Jittori, defence counsel to the accused and the accused were present during the trail.

In the Manipal gang rape, an MBBS student was abducted in an auto-rickshaw by three persons to a remote area and was raped. The Manipal police arrested Yogish, Hariprasad and Anand. The prime accused are facing charges under section IPC 366,  376D, 506 r/w 34 and 201. The police also arrested other two accused Harindra and Balachandra for allegedly tampering scientific evidences.

The prime accused are in judicial custody while the other two accused, facing the charges of tampering of the evidence, are out on bail.

The case was registered in the year 2013. The Chief Judicial Magistrate has transferred the case to the District Sessions Court. The case is now on the verge of completion with the recording of statements of the accused.
