Udupi: Suicide is not the Solution, We are with the Farmers – Minister Sorake During ‘Raitha Santwana Yatra’ Inauguration

Udupi: Committing suicide is not the solution to the problems, the state government has implemented several development schemes for the welfare of the farmers and the government is always ready to help the farmers in their needs said the district minister in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ‘Badaku Besaya Raitha Santwana Yatra’ to instil confidence in the farmers and give them information about various schemes of the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments. The programme was organised by Information and broadcasting department Udupi district, Agriculture department and Rotary Club Malpe-Kodavoor at Havanje Gram Panchayat, here on Wednesday August 5.

The government has instructed the finance companies not to charge high interest rates. Some finance companies charge very high interest rates of more than 14%, action will be taken against the finance companies who violate the law and charge high interest rates, he said.

The state government is providing loan upto Rs 2 lakh to farmers without any interest and 3% interest will be charrged for loan of Rs 3 lakh and above. So far over 16 lakh farmers have benifitted under the schemes. Sorake also said that officials in Udupi have been instructed to compensate the farmers who have lost their crops due to heavy rains. Nearly 8200 acres of deemed forest land has been identified for relaxation in the district. All measures have been taken to eliminate false rumours created among the people against the recommendations made in the Kasturirangan report. We have gathered opinion from the villegers who have been affected and their opinion has been sent to the central government.

Agriculture scholar P Ramachandra Bhat spoke about focusing on the challenges faced by farmers and the benefits of integrated farming. Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, ZP CEO Kanagavalli, District information and broadcasting officer Rohini also spoke on the occasion.
